対象はNEW TREASURE Stage2を使う中高一貫校の中2前後です。全問慶英会の独自制作で、出版社の教科書・解答、学校の過去問は転載していません。学校の版と試験範囲に合わせて既習項目から学んでください。
結論｜5つの語形をどう使い分けるか
- Most students：生徒の大多数。一般的な複数名詞と使う。
- Most of my classmates：特定の集団の大多数。the／myなどの前にofが必要。
- Almost all students：ほぼ全員。almost studentsだけでは不自然。
- Mostly students：『主に生徒』という構成。The visitors were mostly students. が自然。
- The most votes：最多票。最上級と大多数のmostを区別。
- Nearly／almost forty minutes：40分近く。厳密な分数の保証ではない。
たとえば招待50人・出席42人なら『42 out of 50 attended』と数字で記すと明確です。mostやalmost allに常に同じ割合を割り当てることはできません。学校の資料読解でも、確定した数値は推測の言い換えでぼかさず回答します。

初見Read｜学校読書イベントの数量比較（問41〜48）
独自英文：At Westbrook School, fifty students were invited to a reading event. Forty-six registered, but forty-two actually attended. Most of the attendees said that they wanted more quiet reading time. A short survey was completed by forty attendees: twenty-eight chose the library as their favourite place, nine chose the classroom, and three chose the garden. The library received the most votes. The organisers mostly used the library during the event, but they held one short session outside. Planning took nearly four weeks. In their report, students wrote, ‘Almost all invited students attended.’ The teacher asked them to use exact figures instead. Four invited students had not registered, and four more registered students had not come. The teacher explained that words such as most and almost were useful, but figures were clearer when readers needed an exact comparison. The club agreed to record registration and attendance separately next time.

初見Readの全文和訳
ウェストブルック校では50人の生徒が読書イベントに招待され、46人が登録しましたが、実際に出席したのは42人でした。出席者の大多数は静かに読む時間を増やしたいと考えました。出席者40人が調査に回答し、28人は図書室、9人は教室、3人は庭を好きな場所に選びました。最多票は図書室でした。主催者は主に図書室を使用しましたが、屋外でも短時間の活動を1回行いました。準備には4週間近くかかりました。生徒たちは『招待者のほぼ全員が参加した』と報告しましたが、教師は正確な数字で記すよう求めました。招待者のうち4人が未登録、登録者のうちさらに4人が欠席したためです。mostやalmostは便利でも、正確な比較には実数が明確だと説明しました。クラブは次回、登録と出席を別々に記録することにしました。

mostとalmostは同じですか？
most studentsは大多数の生徒、almost all studentsはほぼ全員です。almost studentsとはしません。
most ofとmostの違いは何ですか？
一般の生徒ならmost students、特定の生徒集団ならmost of the students、所有格が付く場合はmost of my classmatesです。
mostlyは名詞の前に使えますか？
The visitors were mostly students.のように構成を述べられますが、Most students came.のmostとは意味・働きが異なります。
nearlyとalmostはいつも同じですか？
数値や進行度で近い意味になる場合が多いですが、almost never、almost anyのようにalmostが自然な組み合わせもあります。
mostは何％以上ですか？
普通は過半数ですが、文脈上の印象も伴います。正確な数値がある場合、具体的な分子と母数を書いてください。
