「修飾先」を見抜く3つのルール
- 分詞：名詞の後ろに続く～ingは「～している」、過去分詞は「～された・～した状態」の意味になりやすい。何がその動作をするか確かめる
- 関係代名詞：who・which・thatの前にある説明される名詞（先行詞）と、節内の主語・目的語を区別する
- 文全体：後置修飾のかたまりをいったん外し、主節の主語・動詞を確認する
例：The girl holding a camera is Aya. ではholding a cameraが説明しているのはgirlです。cameraがカメラを持っているのではありません。The camera which I bought yesterday is new. ではwhichの先行詞はcameraです。

定期テスト前の5日復習
1日目は修飾先30問を選び、誤答した英文の説明される名詞に線を引きます。2日目は現在分詞と過去分詞を使い分ける英文を新たに3文ずつ作成します。3日目は関係代名詞who・which・thatの先行詞を確認し、Q31〜Q40を訂正。4日目に学校の文法問題集へ戻り、5日目に初見Readの中から修飾語を探し、主節を区切ります。

Q. 名詞のすぐ後ろにある語句が必ずその名詞を説明しますか？ A. 後置修飾では近くの名詞が先行詞になることが多い一方、意味や構造を必ず確かめる必要があります。
Q. thatとwhichは両方正解になることがありますか？ A. 制限用法の目的格などで複数表現が成立する場合があります。この教材は修飾先の理解を目的とし、関係代名詞の唯一の語形を判定するものではありません。
Q. 分詞を使った英文を全訳できません。 A. まず主節のS・Vを決め、どの名詞が分詞の動作をするか／されるかを説明してから訳してください。
