  • 完全に形が変わる:child→children/person→people/man→men/woman→women/mouse→mice/foot→feet/tooth→teeth。
  • -vesになる例:knife→knives/leaf→leaves/wife→wives。ただしroof→roofsのような例外もある。
  • 語尾-y:city→cities、day→days。直前が子音字か母音字かを確認。
  • 語尾-o:photo→photos、potato→potatoes。語ごとに綴りを確認。
  • 単複同形:one sheep/two sheep、one deer/three deer、one fish/five fish(通常の個体数)。

fishとfishesはどちらも英語?

普通に魚を個体数で数えるならone fish/five fishが基本です。しかし、複数の魚種を論じるなどの文脈ではfishesも使われます。単複同形のルールを学校の基本として学びながら、現実の英語には意味による違いがあると理解しましょう。

sheep・deerは名詞の形ではなく数と動詞で判断

One sheep is … とThree sheep are … ではsheepの綴りは同じでも、数と動詞が変わります。複数を意味する主語に合わせてbe動詞・一般動詞を選ぶ必要があります。

personとpeopleの関係

one person/four people が学校英語の基本です。ただしpersonsは法律上・形式的な文脈などで使われることがあり、常に絶対的な誤語というわけではありません。学校の標準的な会話・英作文ではpeopleを優先します。

5.自然展示の英語案内を読む8問(Q33〜Q40)

At a fictional middle school, students prepared a short wildlife and nature exhibition. One group wrote English descriptions of animals that could be seen in different environments. They wanted to practise using correct singular and plural noun forms rather than memorising spelling without meaning. Their teacher asked them to check all labels before visitors arrived. One poster described a single sheep and three sheep. A student had written ‘three sheeps’, but Yui corrected the plural to ‘sheep’. The group also made labels for one deer and two deer. They noticed that English verbs could still change according to number even when a noun had the same form for singular and plural. Another poster included pictures of fish in an aquarium. The students wrote ‘five fish’ because they were counting individual animals. Their teacher explained that ‘fishes’ can also appear in English when discussing different fish species, so spelling rules should not be treated as absolute in every context. The class decided to use examples that matched the intended meanings. At another table, Ken prepared word cards: child and children, woman and women, mouse and mice, tooth and teeth. A student tried to apply ‘-s’ to every word, but the class used the cards to show irregular forms. They also compared leaves and roofs. In the first case, leaf changes to leaves, while the usual plural of roof is roofs. Before the exhibition opened, the class checked agreement between subjects and verbs. ‘One deer is near the trees’ and ‘Three deer are near the trees’ used the same noun form but different verbs. The teacher praised the students for checking both spelling and meaning. The group did not claim that visitors’ English scores improved, because no learning test was conducted.

  • Q33. What was the purpose of the exhibition’s English labels?
  • Q34. How was ‘three sheeps’ corrected?
  • Q35. Which animal other than sheep kept the same singular/plural form?
  • Q36. How did the teacher explain ‘fishes’?
  • Q37. What is the plural of child used on the cards?
  • Q38. What is the plural of leaf?
  • Q39. Why are ‘one deer is’ and ‘three deer are’ both correct?
  • Q40. Did the teacher prove that the exhibition raised English test scores?
