結論｜in conclusion・to sum up・in short・finallyの違い
- in conclusion：In conclusion, we recommend Plan B.（結論として）。
- to sum up：To sum up, both plans have strengths.（要点をまとめると）。
- in short／in brief：In short, more research is needed.（要するに）。
- finally：We checked the data and finally sent the report.（作業順序の最後に）。
- in the end：In the end, we chose Saturday.（検討した末の結末）。
- overall／all in all：Overall, the meeting was useful.（全体として）。
これらの語は文脈によって近い意味で使えることもありますが、具体的な順序なのか、意見の結論なのか、短い要約なのかを考えて使い分けることが重要です。論理を表す語句を使っても根拠が増えるわけではないため、数値や出典は別に確認しましょう。

初見Read｜読書活動の調査・比較・結論（問33〜40）
オリジナル英文：The student council at Birch Lane School compared two plans for a lunchtime reading programme. First, it asked twenty-four students which format they preferred. Fourteen chose paper books, and ten chose digital texts. Next, the council checked the cost of each plan. The paper plan required six new books, while the digital plan could use school devices already available. Finally, the council wrote a report for its teacher. The report said, ‘To sum up, both plans have advantages.’ It added, ‘In conclusion, we recommend trying the paper plan for one month, but we need to measure how often students actually use the books.’ Overall, the council thought the discussion had been worthwhile. The teacher had not yet approved the trial. One student wrote, ‘In short, this is a recommendation, not an approved programme.’ The council decided not to claim that the programme was already successful.

初見英文の全文和訳
バーチレーン校の生徒会は昼休みの読書活動について二つの案を比べました。まず24人の生徒に希望する形式を尋ねたところ、14人が紙の本、10人が電子テキストを選びました。次に費用を調べました。紙の案では新しい本が6冊必要ですが、電子案ではすでにある学校の端末を利用できます。最後に先生への報告書を作り、『まとめると、両案には利点がある』と書きました。結論として、生徒会は紙の案を1か月試すことを勧めましたが、本の利用頻度を測る必要があるとも記しました。全体として、話し合いは価値があったと考えました。ただし試行は教師からまだ承認されていません。一人の生徒は『要するに、これは提案であって承認済みの活動ではない』と書きました。生徒会は活動が成功したとは主張しないことにしました。
7日間で誤答を直す
- In concludeと書いた→In conclusion。
- In shortlyと書いた→In short。
- All at allと書いた→All in all。
- finallyを『最終的にその案を採用』と自動的に訳さない→前後の作業の順序を読む。
- 調査に回答した24人を本が配布された24人と誤読しない。
- 1日目から4日目まで8問ずつ、5日目Read、6日目に自分の発表のまとめを英作文、7日目に誤答を再テスト。
よくある質問
In conclusionとTo sum upは同じですか？
近い意味で使えます。in conclusionは論旨の結論、to sum upは要点をまとめることを強調しやすい表現です。
finallyは必ず結論の合図ですか？
いいえ。複数の手順の最後にも用います。finally submitted the formは提出行為の順序であり、その申請が承認されたとは限りません。
in shortとin briefはどちらも短い要約ですか？
はい。どちらも簡潔にまとめるときに使えます。
overallとall in allは同じですか？
全体的な評価に用いられる点で近い意味です。前後の数値や条件を無視せずに使います。
結論を書けば証拠があることになりますか？
いいえ。Conclusionは意見・判断の部分です。調査や記録など、結論を支える根拠を別に示す必要があります。
