結論｜四つのfirstの使い方を比較
- First, check the instructions.（まず指示を確認）。手順や話の順序。
- At first I was nervous, but later I relaxed.（最初は不安だったが、後で慣れた）。初期の状況と変化。
- First of all, thank you for coming.（まず最初にお越しいただきありがとうございます）。話の冒頭。
- I used the device for the first time yesterday.（昨日初めて使った）。初体験。
- This is the first time I have used it.（今までで初めて使った）。現在までの経験。
at firstの後にbutが必須というわけではありません。ただし初めの状態がその後どうなったかという対比があると使い分けを理解しやすくなります。
理解から実践までの勉強手順
- 問1〜8：順序を示すFirst。問9〜16：初期状態のAt first。
- 問17〜24：経験の初回for the first time。問25〜32：the first time＋節と現在完了。
- 問33〜40：first of allを含む混合英作文。問41〜48：独自Readで説明順・感情の変化・初回経験を確認。
- 翌日・7日後：間違えた英文を模範解答を見ずに書き直す。

オリジナル英文：The environment club at Riverbank School gave a presentation about water use. First, the speakers explained why they had started the project. Second, they showed a simple chart. Third, they described their next steps. At first, Mika was worried about speaking in English, but she became more confident after practising with her classmates. She had spoken to a small group before, but this was the first time she had given a presentation to the whole school. Before speaking, she said, ‘First of all, I’d like to thank our science teacher.’ The members initially planned to show five graphs, but they decided that three clear graphs would be easier to understand. They had collected data for four weeks. The chart showed observed water use, but it did not prove that the project had reduced water use in every classroom. After answering the audience’s questions, the students decided to continue measuring results.

初見英文の全文和訳
