a・anは発音で選ぶ
- a university／a useful tool：頭文字はuだが /j/ の音から始まるためa。
- an hour／an honest answer：hの音が発音されず母音で始まるのでan。
- a European city：Europeanは /j/ の音で始まるためa。
- an apple／an unusual idea：母音で始まる音なのでan。
aとtheは最初に出たか・特定できるか
I found a book. The book was interesting. は、最初は未知の本を導入し、次の文では同じ本を指します。初出だから必ずaとは限らず、the sunやthe second paragraphなど共有知識・順序から特定できるものにはtheを使います。
go to schoolとgo to the schoolの違い
Students go to school to learn. は学校へ通う・学ぶという一般的な活動を示します。We went to the school building on Sunday. は特定の校舎への訪問です。the schoolも建物・特定の学校を指す場面で使えるので、『学校の前は絶対無冠詞』と覚えないでください。
不可算名詞にもtheは付く
Music is important to me. は音楽一般ですが、The music in this film is beautiful. は特定の音楽です。informationやwaterなど不可算名詞にも、対象が特定されればthe information in this report／the water in this bottleとtheを付けることがあります。
