結論｜Where is …?を埋め込むとwhere … isへ戻す

• 直接疑問：Where is the room?
• 間接疑問：Could you tell me where the room is?
• 一般動詞：Where did they go? → I wonder where they went.
• Yes/No：Is the room open? → I wonder if the room is open.
• 疑問詞が主語：Who wrote the report? → Do you know who wrote the report?

外側の文がDo you know …?ならDoは必要ですが、内側の節でdidやdoesを通常の直接疑問と同じ形のまま残しません。who自体が主語の場合はWho wrote …?の語順が保たれる点も重要です。

公式学校案内は主体性・協働・表現を重視した教育目標を説明します。しかし、この間接疑問の40問が学校の特定のテストに出たわけではありません。直江津中等の学校英語の学習ガイドでは学校英語全般を、仮定法と現実条件の独自40問ではifの条件、今回はif/whetherが「〜かどうか」を表す間接疑問の用法を別に扱います。

直接疑問から間接疑問への5ステップ

1. 疑問詞what / where / when / why / howがあるかを確認する。
2. 疑問詞があれば残して、後ろを主語＋動詞の順にする。
3. do/does/didを取り除き、元の時制を動詞へ反映する。
4. Yes/No疑問ならif / whetherを使って節を始める。
5. 外側が疑問文なら疑問符、I wonderなどの平叙文ならピリオドにする。

ifの条件文との違い

I wonder if the room is open.のifは「開いているかどうか」です。一方If the room is open, we will go inside.のifは「もし開いていたら」という現実の条件です。用法を取り違えると前後のつながりが変わるため、主節も含めて読むようにしてください。

第4部｜架空の学校案内の間接疑問を読む10問（問31〜40）

At a fictional secondary school, students were preparing a guide for visitors. A teacher asked them where the entrance signs were. The students checked the building but did not know whether every route was accessible. One student wondered why a narrow path had been included on the map. Another asked a staff member how visitors could reach the library without using stairs. Next, the group asked younger students if the English instructions were easy to understand. Several said the letters were too small. The students printed a new version and asked a teacher when the information should be reviewed again. The teacher explained that room locations and opening hours might change. Finally, they marked which details were confirmed and which still needed checking. The group realized that polite questions and careful evidence are both important.

間接疑問文の典型的な5つの失点

• where is the roomをそのまま文中へ入れる。
• why did she leaveのdidを残す。
• what time does it startのdoesを残し、動詞を三単現に戻さない。
• whetherの後でも疑問の倒置を残す。
• whoが主語である疑問文にも不要なdoを入れる。

40問の点数は学校の評定や英検CSEスコアに換算できません。疑問文の丁寧さと、関係節・主節の時制が正しいかを、翌日と4日後にもう一度確認してください。

基本的なYes/No疑問で交換可能な場合がありますが、すべての構文で同じではありません。
