結論｜where the library is が間接疑問の基本語順

• 直接疑問：Where is the library?
• 間接疑問：Could you tell me where the library is?
• 一般動詞：Where did they go? → I wonder where they went.
• Yes/Noの疑問：I wonder if the room is open.
• 疑問詞が主語：Do you know who wrote the report?

疑問文の一部を文中へ埋め込むと、Where is she? → I don’t know where she is.となります。外側の文そのものがDo you know…?なら、最初のDoは必要です。

間接疑問文を作る5ステップ

1. 疑問詞what/where/whyなどを見つける。
2. 疑問詞の後を主語＋動詞の順に戻す。
3. do/does/didを消し、元の時制を動詞へ反映する。
4. Yes/Noの疑問ならif/whetherで節を始める。
5. 文全体が疑問文か平叙文かに応じて句読点を決める。

直接疑問文と間接疑問文を比較する

I wonder if the library is open.のifは「開いているかどうか」という間接疑問ですが、If the library is open, I will go there.は現実の条件です。同じifでも役割を混同しないようにしましょう。

第4部｜架空の学校案内の英文読解（問31〜40）

At a fictional school, a group of students wanted to improve information for visitors. First, they asked a librarian where the study rooms were. The librarian showed them a map but could not say whether every route was accessible. A student wondered why a narrow path was missing from the guide. The group measured several walkways and asked visitors if the instructions were easy to read. Some visitors explained that the letters were too small. After revising the guide, the students asked a teacher when the information should be reviewed again. The teacher reminded them that opening hours and room locations could change. The group added a note explaining which facts had been confirmed and which still required checking.

間接疑問で失点する5つの原因

• 語順：where is the roomをそのまま埋め込む。
• does：what time does it startのdoesが残る。
• did：why did she leaveのdidを残し、動詞を過去形にしない。
• if：「〜かどうか」と条件を混同する。
• who：疑問詞そのものが主語の文を誤って倒置する。

標準的にはCould you tell me where the room is?です。

Q. I wonderの後の間接疑問には疑問符を付けますか？

I wonder where it is.のように文全体が平叙文なら通常ピリオドです。

Q. ifとwhetherは同じですか？

基本的なYes/Noの埋め込みでは使える場面がありますが、どの構文でも完全に交換できるわけではありません。

Q. whoが主語でも語順を変えますか？

Who made it? → Do you know who made it?ではwho madeの順序を保ちます。
