結論：接続詞と前置詞は訳語が似ていても、後ろに続ける英文の形が異なります。because it rainedは節、because of the rainは名詞句。Although it was coldは節、despite the coldは名詞句です。ただしbeforeやafterのように接続詞と前置詞の両方になる語、sinceのように時間と理由の意味がある語もあるため、単純に一語一品詞と決めず、文脈・語順を確認しましょう。

主語＋動詞か、名詞句かを見分ける4つの手順
- 空所直後の語を一語だけ見るのではなく、主語と述語動詞があるか確かめる。
- 名詞句・動名詞ならbecause of／despite／duringなどの候補、節ならbecause／although／whileなどの候補を考える。
- 逆接・理由・時・条件のどれを表すか、前後の意味のつながりを確認する。
- 接続副詞however／thereforeでは文の区切り・句読点も確認する。
例えばdespite the fact that he was tiredは文法的に可能です。despiteの直後に名詞句the factが続き、その中にthat節が含まれる構造です。本記事の短い規則は基本的な解答の判断を助けるものであり、すべての例外を機械的に除くものではありません。

1. because／because of｜理由の節か名詞句か
基本ルール：because＋主語・動詞のある節／because of＋名詞句・動名詞句
