慶英会ではfewer / less、as … as、the number of、by / to、at least / at mostなどを独自40問(4択20問・誤文訂正12問・オリジナル2長文8問)で学習できる無料教材を制作しました。
- the number of visitors has increased:訪問者数が増えた(主語はnumberで単数)。a number of visitors have arrived:多くの訪問者が到着した(複数)。
- twice as many students as:生徒数が2倍。twice as much water as:水量が2倍。
- from 25% to 35%:25%から35%へ増加。

A middle school wanted to understand how students traveled to school. In April, teachers surveyed 120 students. Seventy-two students said they usually walked, thirty said they rode bicycles, and eighteen used public transportation. The school then installed a new bicycle parking area, hoping to make cycling more convenient.
In July, the teachers surveyed another group of 120 students. Forty-eight said they walked, forty-two rode bicycles, and thirty used public transportation. Compared with April, the number of bicycle users in the July survey was twelve higher. The proportion rose from 25 percent to 35 percent, a difference of ten percentage points.
Some students argued that the new parking area had caused the increase. However, the teachers pointed out that the two surveys involved different groups of students. A new bus route had also started in June, which could have affected travel choices. For these reasons, the school did not claim that parking alone explained the results.
Instead, teachers planned another survey in the autumn and asked students to give reasons for their travel choices. They wanted to know whether the parking area was actually useful before spending money on further improvements.

A town library tested longer opening hours for a public study room. Before the change, the room closed at six in the evening. During the four-week trial, it remained open until eight. The staff wanted to know whether students needed the extra two hours.
In the first week, there were sixty evening visits after six. In the fourth week, that number reached ninety. This was an increase of thirty visits, or 50 percent compared with the first week. However, the number of students was not necessarily ninety, because one student could visit several times. Staff recorded visits rather than unique individuals.
The room had forty seats. On the busiest evening, thirty-six were occupied at the same time. The room was therefore not completely full, although it was close to its seating limit. Some residents suggested expanding the room immediately. The library decided to wait.
The trial took place during a school examination period, when more students might need quiet places to study. Staff planned to repeat the trial in a normal month and compare electricity and staffing costs. Only after reviewing these details would the library decide whether to extend the opening hours permanently.
