最初に結論｜4つの句動詞の意味と文型
- find out：情報を調べて知る。find out why … / find out whether … で理由や可否を確かめる。
- figure out：考えて理解・解決する。figure out how to do / figure out a solution。
- work out：計画などがうまくいく。The plan worked out well. またwork out a solutionのように解決策を考える場合もある。
- turn out：結局〜だと分かる。turn out to be＋形容詞・名詞、It turned out that … の形が重要。
- 共通する注意：find outとfigure outは場面によって意味が重なることがあります。文の目的語・後続構文・状況を合わせて考えます。
Readingのポイント｜予測・行動・確認後の結果
We predicted that the plan would work out.（うまくいくと予測した）とThe plan worked out.（実際にうまくいった）は同じではありません。また、It turned out to be successful.は結果の判明です。推測が確かめられたのか、まだ未確認なのかを本文で確認してください。

長文1｜学校図書館の予約制度はうまくいったのか
A school introduced an online system for reserving study rooms. At first, some students could not figure out how to make a booking because the instructions were too complicated. The librarians rewrote the instructions and added pictures. After a week, many more students managed to reserve rooms without help. However, the system did not always work out as expected. On busy days, some students booked a room but did not come. The library wanted to find out why this happened before changing its rules. Staff members also learned that the number of reservations was not the same as the number of rooms actually used. They planned to record both figures for several months.

長文2｜科学プロジェクトの予測と実際の結果
A secondary school science club designed a model bridge using recycled materials. The students predicted that the first design would hold a heavy weight. During the test, however, one part broke. The team spent time trying to figure out why the model had failed. After checking the shape and the materials, they changed the position of two supporting pieces. The next test worked out better, and the bridge held a much heavier object. Still, the teacher reminded students that they needed more tests before calling the design reliable. The final result turned out to be different from the first prediction. The class wrote a report explaining both its mistakes and improvements.

復習方法｜7日で語法を定着させる
- 当日：4句動詞の意味の違いを日本語で説明し、自分で例文を1文ずつ作る。
- 翌日：find out why / figure out how / work out well / turn out to be の構文を白紙で再現する。
- 3日後：誤文訂正8問をやり直し、間接疑問文の語順を確認する。
- 5日後：長文にある予測と実際の結果を分けて説明する。
- 7日後：別の初見読解を解き、同じ句動詞がどの文型で用いられるか確かめる。
よくある質問
Q. find outとfigure outは同じですか？ どちらも「分かる」ことに関係しますが、find outは情報を確認して知る、figure outは考えて理解するという違いを意識すると読みやすくなります。
Q. work outは「運動する」だけですか？ いいえ。The plan worked out.のように「計画がうまくいく」意味や、work out a solutionのように「解決策を考え出す」意味もあります。
Q. turn out to beはどう訳しますか？ 「結果として〜だと判明する」です。予想していた段階とは区別してください。
Q. find out how did it work と書けますか？ 間接疑問文ならfind out how it workedの語順にします。
