Several families in a neighborhood wanted to turn vegetable scraps into compost for their gardens. They placed a shared compost box beside a community garden. Each household could bring fruit and vegetable scraps, but meat, fish, and plastic packaging were not accepted. During the first month, volunteers weighed 180 kilograms of material placed into the box. After several weeks, they collected about 65 kilograms of finished compost. Some residents were surprised that the final amount was much smaller. The volunteers explained that water and other materials were lost as the scraps broke down, so the starting and ending weights would not be the same. The project did not prove that the neighborhood had reduced all household waste by 180 kilograms. Some of the scraps might previously have been used at home, and the volunteers did not count changes in other types of rubbish. A questionnaire was completed by 42 residents. Thirty said they wanted to continue using the shared box, eight were unsure, and four said the rules were difficult to follow. The volunteers responded by putting pictures of accepted materials beside the box. In the next stage, the organizers will compare the amount of general rubbish collected before and after the program. They will also ask gardeners whether the compost is easy to use.

Q26. Which material cannot be placed in the compost box?

  1. Vegetable scraps
  2. Plastic packaging
  3. Fruit scraps
  4. Peels from vegetables

Q27. Why was the finished compost much lighter than the original scraps?

  1. All the scraps had been stolen
  2. The box was much smaller than expected
  3. Water and other materials were lost during decomposition
  4. The volunteers added more plastic

Q28. How many surveyed residents wanted to continue using the box?

  1. Four
  2. Eight
  3. Forty-two
  4. Thirty

Q29. Why was the amount of household waste reduced not confirmed?

  1. Other rubbish and previous uses of scraps were not measured
  2. The box accepted meat and fish
  3. The compost always weighed 180 kilograms
  4. The volunteers had never checked the box

1「Other rubbish and previous uses of scraps were not measured」
