Two middle schools wanted to find out whether the amount of sunlight affected how fast bean plants grew. School A put twelve bean plants beside a south-facing window, while School B placed twelve plants near a shaded north-facing window. Both schools used the same kind of soil and gave each plant the same amount of water. After four weeks, the students measured the height of every plant. The average height was 18 centimeters at School A and 12 centimeters at School B. Some students said that sunlight must have caused the difference. Their teacher pointed out that the plants were also in different rooms. The room temperatures might not have been the same. The students therefore planned a second experiment at one school. They would put twenty-four plants in the same room, divided into two groups of twelve. Both groups would receive the same kind of soil and the same amount of water. However, one group would receive less light because of a screen. The teacher explained that a single experiment could not prove what happened in every garden. Repeating the experiment and measuring the conditions carefully would provide stronger evidence about the effect of sunlight.

Q26. What was the average height at School A after four weeks?

  1. 12 centimeters
  2. 18 centimeters
  3. 24 centimeters
  4. 30 centimeters

Q27. Why couldn’t the students conclude that sunlight caused the difference?

  1. Both groups were in the same room
  2. The plants were in different rooms with possibly different temperatures
  3. Neither school used any soil
  4. The plants were never watered

Q28. How many plants would each group have in the second experiment?

  1. Twelve
  2. Eighteen
  3. Twenty-four
  4. Thirty-six

Q29. What would strengthen the evidence in the second experiment?

  1. Using different soil and water for each group
  2. Moving one group to another school
  3. Keeping other conditions the same and repeating careful measurements
  4. Ending the experiment after one day

Writing

Yes, I think more schools should try indoor gardening because students can learn how plants grow even when the weather is bad. It can also make science lessons more interesting. What vegetables are you growing in your garden? How many hours do you keep the lamps on each day?

Yes, I think students should learn how to check scientific claims. First, they can understand why one experiment may not prove an idea. For example, they can compare results under similar conditions. Second, checking evidence can help students avoid sharing incorrect information. These skills are useful when studying science and making decisions in everyday life.

  • 短文:apply for、be suitable for、draw a conclusion、encourage A to do、prefer A to Bを復習する。
