A local library began a program to lend musical instruments to students who wanted to try playing music before buying anything. The library offered small keyboards, ukuleles, and hand drums. Students could borrow one instrument for seven days after showing their library cards. They had to check the instrument with a volunteer before taking it home. In the first month, 65 students borrowed instruments. The library recorded 88 loans because some students tried more than one instrument on different visits. Forty students answered a short survey. Twenty-seven said that the service helped them discover an instrument they liked, nine were unsure, and four said it did not. The organizers knew that forty answers did not represent all students in town. They also had not checked whether students continued practicing after returning the instruments, so they could not conclude that the program had created long-term musical habits. At first, several students found it hard to understand the borrowing rules. The library added pictures and short explanations to its website. It also started offering ten-minute demonstrations on Saturday mornings. Staff plan to ask new borrowers how clear the instructions are before expanding the instrument collection.

Q26. How many students borrowed instruments in the first month?

  1. 40
  2. 65
  3. 88
  4. 105

Q27. Why did the library record more loans than borrowers?

  1. Every student kept an instrument forever
  2. Some students borrowed different instruments on separate visits
  3. The library sold instruments to teachers
  4. All students borrowed two instruments at the same time

Q28. What did 27 of the 40 students surveyed say?

  1. The service helped them find an instrument they liked
  2. They had practiced for a full year
  3. They wanted the library to stop lending instruments
  4. They had already purchased expensive keyboards

Q29. Why did the library add pictures and short explanations?

  1. The instruments were all too old
  2. The library wanted to start a book sale
  3. Some students found the borrowing rules difficult to understand
  4. The town required every student to take music classes

Q21 正解1「For this reason」

2「not to claim that the posters alone caused the decrease」

2「Some students borrowed different instruments on separate visits」

1「The service helped them find an instrument they liked」

3「Some students found the borrowing rules difficult to understand」

Writing

Yes, I think more schools should hold student-run festivals because students can learn to cooperate and take responsibility. They may also become more confident when speaking to visitors. How many students are planning your festival? Where will the performances take place at your school?

Yes, I think schools should teach students basic first-aid skills. First, students can learn how to respond calmly when someone needs help. For example, they could practice calling an adult and explaining an emergency. Second, these lessons can make students more aware of safety in everyday life. The skills may help them protect themselves and others.
