Every Wednesday, a group of students meets at a small repair workshop near the station. They help neighbors fix simple objects such as lamps and chairs. At first, some visitors were not sure (21). The students therefore made a poster showing the basic safety rules and asked an adult volunteer to check each tool before anyone used it. The workshop does not accept electrical items that could be dangerous. Last month, a resident brought a wooden chair with a loose leg. Two students worked on it with an adult and explained each step to the owner. (22), other residents became interested in learning simple repairs instead of immediately buying new things. The organizers now plan to offer a short beginner class.

Q21. At first, some visitors were not sure (21).

  1. how to use the tools safely
  2. where the train would stop
  3. why the chairs were expensive
  4. when the school would close

Q22. (22), other residents became interested in learning simple repairs.

Subject: Change to the Book Exchange Day
Dear volunteers,
Thank you for helping us prepare the community book exchange. We originally planned to hold it at the town library on Saturday morning. However, workers will repair part of the library roof this weekend, so we must use the sports hall instead.
The event for visitors will now run from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday. Volunteers should arrive at the sports hall at 11:30 a.m. to set up the tables. Please do not arrive at the library.
If you have already made labels for your books on paper, bring them with you. If you prefer digital labels, send the file to me by noon on Friday so I can print it. Each visitor may bring up to three books, but we cannot accept magazines or damaged books.
We hope to see you there.
Best regards,
Ms. Sato
Community Library Team

Q23. What has changed about the book exchange event?

  1. It will be held online next week.
  2. It will take place at the sports hall from noon.
  3. It will start at the library at 11:30 a.m.
  4. It has been canceled because of the roof repair.

Q24. What should a volunteer who chooses digital labels do?

  1. Send the file by Friday noon.
  2. Bring four magazines on Saturday.
  3. Visit the library before the event.
  4. Print all the labels on Monday.

Q25. Why are volunteers asked to arrive at 11:30 a.m.?

  2. To choose new magazines.
  3. To prepare tables before the visitors arrive.
  4. To count damaged books at the library.

A town council wanted to make the area around bus stops more comfortable in summer. It asked 180 bus users to choose the one improvement they wanted most. Of these people, 120 chose more shade, 40 chose extra benches, and 20 chose clearer signs. The council explained that these numbers describe only the people who answered the survey, not everyone living in the town. At first, some members suggested planting trees beside every bus stop. Others pointed out that underground pipes could be damaged by tree roots. The council decided to check the pipes before choosing places for permanent trees. As a first step, it will test removable shade covers at three busy stops during the coming summer. Staff will record how often the covers need repairs, whether they block people’s view of buses, and how passengers use them. The council has not yet measured the temperature changes caused by the covers. It therefore says the pilot will show whether the covers are practical, but it cannot yet prove how much cooler they make the area. Next spring, the council will consider planting trees at stops where the underground pipes make planting safe. It will also read feedback from passengers who use wheelchairs or pushchairs before choosing the final design.

Q26. What does the survey show?

  1. All residents of the town want more trees.
  2. 120 of the 180 respondents chose more shade.
  3. Most respondents wanted new signs.
  4. Every person was allowed to choose several improvements.

Q27. Why did the council decide not to plant trees everywhere immediately?

  1. It learned that benches were cheaper.
  2. It had already planted trees at all stops.
  3. Tree roots might affect underground pipes.
  4. Bus passengers asked for no shade at all.

Q28. What will staff check during the summer pilot?

  1. Whether the covers need repairs and block the view of buses.
  2. Whether all school students can ride buses for free.
  3. How many years the trees have been growing.
  4. The number of books exchanged at the library.

Q29. Which statement is supported by the passage?

  1. The covers have already lowered temperatures by five degrees.
  2. The town has decided to remove every bus stop bench.
  3. The final design will be chosen without passenger feedback.
  4. The council still needs more evidence before choosing a final design.

1「how to use the tools safely」。
解説:直後に道具の安全規則ポスターと成人の点検があるので、how to use the tools safely。

Q22 正解2「As a result」。
As a resultが最適。

2「It will take place at the sports hall from noon.」。
解説:本文冒頭の「sports hall instead」と「from noon until 2 p.m.」

1「Send the file by Friday noon.」。
解説:send the file … by noon on Fridayを直接確認。

3「To prepare tables before the visitors arrive.」。
解説:to set up the tables。

2「120 of the 180 respondents chose more shade.」。

Q27 正解3「Tree roots might affect underground pipes.」。
解説:underground pipes could be damaged by tree rootsという懸念が根拠。

1「Whether the covers need repairs and block the view of buses.」。
解説:repairs, block people’s view, passengers use themを記録。

4「The council still needs more evidence before choosing a final design.」。

Writing

I think a digital map is useful because students can learn about old places while walking around town. It may also make history more interesting. What kinds of buildings does your map include? Can students use the map on their phones without the Internet?

採点前の自己点検:①Do you think…

Yes, I think schools should teach basic cooking more often. First, students can learn to prepare simple meals and become more independent at home. For example, they could make breakfast safely. Second, cooking lessons can teach students to work together and plan their time. These skills will be useful in their daily lives.
