In a fictional school study, researchers compared two teaching methods across a large group of students. One group used a digital vocabulary application, while the other continued with regular printed exercises. At the end of the study, the first group had an average score of 73.6 points, compared with 73.1 points in the second group. Using their stated statistical test and assumptions, the researchers called the difference statistically significant. However, the average difference was only half a point on a 100-point scale. Several teachers questioned whether such a small change would be meaningful in daily classroom decisions. The researchers therefore recommended examining learning time, costs and longer-term results before making the application compulsory. They also noted that statistical significance alone did not prove that the technology would improve every student’s performance.
問33.What were the two average scores?
問34.How did the researchers describe the result?
問35.Why did teachers question the result’s practical value?
問36.Did the study establish that all students benefited?
A fictional library undertook a substantial renovation to improve accessibility and create more study space. The project required considerable staff effort and a large investment in furniture and equipment. After reopening, the number of weekly visitors increased from 800 to 808, which the manager described as only a marginal rise. The library also recorded a 0.2 percent increase in electricity consumption. For the specific purpose of reviewing its overall operating budget, officials considered that additional electricity cost negligible, although they acknowledged that different evaluation goals might lead to different judgments. The project was not considered a complete failure because visitors with mobility difficulties reported easier access to the building. However, the report said the early attendance figures alone were not strong evidence of a major increase in demand. Staff planned further surveys before drawing a final conclusion about the investment’s overall value.
問37.What made the renovation substantial?
問38.How much did weekly attendance rise?
問39.Why did officials call the electricity increase negligible?
問40.What prevented a final conclusion about total value?

他の選択肢:important/substantial/considerable は意味が近くても「統計的に有意」という専門表現ではない。
問2:A negligible。
問5:A considerable。 理由:considerable time and effort は相当な時間と労力。
問9:A substantial。
問13:A substantial。
理由:significant for …

34:As statistically significant under their test and assumptions./根拠:特定の検定と前提条件に依存する。
問35:The average difference was only half a point./根拠:実生活上の差の大きさと有意性は別。
問36:No. It did not guarantee an improvement for every student./根拠:平均値から全員の効果を断定できない。
37:It required a large investment and considerable work./根拠:substantial investmentとconsiderable effortの対応。
問38:By eight visitors, from 800 to 808./根拠:8/800=1%。
問39:They judged its cost small relative to the overall operating budget./根拠:評価目的・比較対象を踏まえた言い方。
問40:Early attendance figures did not establish overall demand or all benefits./根拠:来館数だけでは成果全体を評価できない。
