Original passage(慶英会独自英文)
In a farming district that had experienced several unusually dry summers, researchers established a small seed bank. Its collection included varieties of beans and grains that local families had grown for generations. Some of these varieties produced smaller harvests than commercially popular crops, but they tolerated conditions in which other plants struggled. The researchers hoped that preserving many varieties would give farmers more options if future weather patterns became less predictable.
However, storing seeds did not mean that they would remain useful forever. Some lost the ability to grow if they were kept too warm or exposed to moisture. The staff checked samples periodically, and when germination rates declined, they grew plants in controlled plots to collect fresh seeds. This process required land, trained workers, and careful records. Moreover, having a seed in storage did not guarantee that the resulting crop would perform well on every farm. Soil quality, farming methods, and local climate still mattered.
The project therefore combined preservation with field trials involving farmers. It also documented who had supplied the seeds and how the varieties had traditionally been used. Instead of promising that one old crop would solve all problems caused by drought, the researchers regarded diversity as a source of options that deserved continued testing. The collection could support adaptation, but it was not a substitute for improving water management and farming practices.

Original passage(慶英会独自英文)
A group of gardeners organized a seed-exchange event to encourage residents to grow vegetables suited to their local environment. Participants brought small packets of seeds and shared stories about how their families had cultivated the plants. Some varieties had unfamiliar colors or shapes, attracting visitors who rarely saw them in supermarkets. The organizers hoped the event would preserve practical knowledge as well as planting material.
Not everyone welcomed the idea of exchanging seeds without restrictions. Experienced growers explained that seeds from plants grown close together could sometimes produce unexpected characteristics in the next generation. Others raised concerns about the accidental spread of plant diseases. The organizers also discovered that labels such as "easy to grow" were of little help without information about soil, temperature, and when seeds were collected. A packet that worked well in one garden might fail in another.
Rather than canceling the event, the group introduced clear labeling guidelines and invited agricultural advisers to discuss storage, plant health, and suitable growing conditions. Participants were encouraged to test a few seeds before planting their entire gardens. The group also kept descriptions of local practices, while reminding visitors that those methods might need adjustment elsewhere. By connecting seed sharing with reliable information, the organizers aimed to make the activity more useful without presenting every packet as equally dependable.

問10. Why did experienced growers express concern? (A) All gardens had identical growing conditions (B) Seeds could show unexpected traits or spread plant diseases (C) The event had no participants (D) Nobody knew how to package seeds
問11. What information did the label ‘easy to grow’ fail to provide? (A) The name of the nearest supermarket (B) The number of visitors at the event (C) The color of the seed packet (D) Conditions such as soil, temperature, and collection time
問12. What did the group do instead of canceling the event? (A) It set labeling rules and invited agricultural advisers (B) It removed all advice about plant health (C) It banned descriptions of local farming (D) It stated that every seed was equally reliable
問13. Why were participants advised to plant only a few test seeds first? (A) Because every seed was too valuable to use (B) To assess performance before planting an entire garden (C) Because seeds cannot be stored after purchase (D) To prove all gardens were identical
問14. What is the best summary of the project? (A) Exchanging seeds is useful only when varieties look identical (B) Local knowledge should never be shared (C) Seed sharing becomes more useful when accompanied by reliable, context-specific guidance (D) Organizers concluded that all seeds were dangerous

Original passage(慶英会独自英文)
An international research foundation funded several facilities that stored crop seeds at low temperatures. News reports often focused on how many samples each facility could hold. Yet the foundation argued that a large collection was not automatically a useful one. Researchers had to know what each sample contained, whether it could still grow, and under what conditions it might help farmers or scientists. Without reliable records, boxes of seeds could be difficult to identify or retrieve.
Maintaining these collections also required ongoing investment. Cooling systems consumed electricity, and replacement equipment could be expensive. A temporary power failure did not necessarily destroy every sample, but a prolonged disruption could increase the risk of damage. The foundation therefore encouraged facilities to maintain backup plans and to distribute copies of some samples across separate locations. This reduced the chance that a single problem would affect all copies, although it increased coordination and storage costs.
Another issue concerned access. Researchers sometimes needed seeds for breeding experiments, but local communities wanted recognition for varieties they had preserved for generations. The foundation asked each facility to clarify how requests would be reviewed and how information about the seeds’ origins would be retained. Its leaders concluded that the long-term value of a collection depended not merely on its size but on maintenance, documentation, and fair procedures for responsible use.
