The results suggest a possible change. The results prove a permanent change.

Original passage|

A wildlife center invited residents to record birds they saw in neighborhood parks. The center wanted to understand how bird populations changed between seasons, especially in areas that professional researchers could visit only occasionally. Volunteers entered observations into a mobile application, noting the species, location, and time. Within three months, the project had collected far more records than the center’s small research team could have gathered alone. Yet the researchers warned that a large number of records did not automatically produce an accurate picture. Popular parks attracted many volunteers, while less accessible areas received little attention. Beginners also sometimes confused similar-looking species. In addition, a single bird could be recorded by several people on the same afternoon. Treating every entry as evidence of a different animal would exaggerate the population. The center responded by offering short identification workshops and asking volunteers to report how long they had observed each site. Researchers also planned professional surveys in places with few volunteer records. Rather than using the application data to announce exact population totals, the team intended to identify possible changes that deserved closer investigation. Public participation expanded the project’s reach, but professional checks remained necessary.

Original passage|

Several schools joined a community project in which students tested water quality along a local river. At first, groups recorded temperature and acidity using inexpensive testing kits. The program encouraged students to ask questions about their surroundings, and the results were displayed at a public event. Some participants were excited when they found unusually high readings near a busy road. However, the project coordinators advised against drawing conclusions from a single measurement. Rainfall could change the river’s conditions within hours, and kits stored incorrectly sometimes gave inconsistent readings. In one case, two groups tested samples taken from the same location but reported different results. The difference did not necessarily mean that the water had suddenly become more polluted. It could reflect differences in testing procedures or the time at which samples were collected. To make comparisons more meaningful, the coordinators prepared a shared checklist. Students were asked to record weather conditions, sampling times, and the methods they used. They repeated measurements when results seemed unusual and sent some samples to a laboratory. The goal was not to turn every student into a professional scientist overnight. Instead, the project aimed to teach participants how observations become stronger evidence when procedures are documented and uncertain findings are checked.

8.What did students initially measure? (A) River temperature and acidity (B) Air pressure inside classrooms (C) The weight of nearby bridges (D) The speed of all passing cars

問9.Why were some participants excited? (A) The river had already been declared safe (B) They discovered a previously unknown fish (C) They found unusually high readings near a road (D) They had solved all pollution problems

問10.What could explain different results at the same location? (A) An immediate nationwide increase in pollution (B) Differences in procedures or sampling times (C) A permanent change in the river’s direction (D) The absence of any testing equipment

問11.What did coordinators ask students to record? (A) Only the names of the most excited participants (B) Only the price of testing equipment (C) The names of all people living nearby (D) Weather, sampling time, and testing methods

問12.What happened when results were unusual? (A) They were repeated, and some samples were examined in a laboratory (B) They were automatically labeled fraudulent (C) They were sent to another school for grading only (D) They were used as proof without further checks

問13.What did the project mainly aim to teach? (A) How to become an expert in one afternoon (B) How documented procedures and checks strengthen evidence (C) Why rainfall never changes rivers (D) Why schools should avoid scientific projects

問14.What is the safest inference about a single high reading? (A) It proves that the entire river is unsafe (B) It must be a mistake and can be ignored (C) It should be interpreted with conditions and further tests (D) It shows pollution levels never change

Original passage|

An astronomy club launched a project asking households to record how many stars they could see from their neighborhoods. The project was intended to raise awareness of artificial light at night and to identify places where changes in lighting might affect people’s view of the sky. Participants followed a simple guide, observed the same group of stars, and submitted estimates through an online form. The club received hundreds of reports from towns and villages within its region. Initially, the organizers noticed that some neighborhoods seemed to have much darker skies than others. But they soon realized that observation conditions varied considerably. Thin clouds made faint stars harder to see, and the brightness of the moon influenced visibility. Some participants observed immediately after looking at bright phone screens, leaving their eyes less adjusted to darkness. Comparing the raw estimates without recording these conditions could produce misleading rankings. The club revised its instructions to ask participants to note cloud cover and moonlight and to spend several minutes adjusting their eyes before counting. It also encouraged people to repeat observations on different evenings. Local authorities expressed interest in the findings, but the club cautioned that the reports alone could not establish how much lighting should be changed. The data were useful for identifying locations to investigate, not for making final policy decisions without further evidence.

15.What was one aim of the project? (A) To replace all streetlights immediately (B) To explore places where artificial light could affect sky visibility (C) To prove that moonlight is harmful (D) To sell telescopes to every family

問16.What did participants report? (A) Estimates of stars visible from their neighborhoods (B) The exact age of every star (C) The number of satellites launched worldwide (D) The cost of public electricity

問17.Why might raw estimates produce misleading rankings? (A) Every participant used an identical telescope (B) The number of stars cannot change at all (C) Cloud, moon, and observers’ dark adaptation varied (D) All towns had the same lighting

問18.How did the organizers revise their instructions? (A) They forbade all evening observations (B) They asked participants to turn on more lights (C) They stopped reporting the number of stars (D) They added condition records and encouraged repeated observations

問19.What was the local authorities’ response? (A) They showed interest but no final decision was established by these reports (B) They immediately ordered every light to be removed (C) They rejected every observation as useless (D) They canceled the astronomy club’s activities

問20.How should the data primarily be used? (A) To announce one final ranking without controls (B) To select locations for closer investigation (C) To calculate the exact age of the universe (D) To replace all technical measurements

問21.What common principle links all three passages? (A) Volunteer data are always more accurate than professional data (B) Any large dataset proves a claim (C) Data collection is valuable when limitations and checks are considered (D) Scientific uncertainty means there is no value in public participation
