Original passage(慶英会作成)
A coastal cooperative began a trial farm for edible seaweed in a sheltered bay. Members hoped to create an additional source of income for fishing families during seasons when catches were low. The project also attracted interest from a local school because students could observe how a marine crop grew without being planted in soil. Volunteers measured the growth of the seaweed and recorded changes in water conditions throughout the trial.
Although the first harvest was promising, the cooperative resisted the idea of rapidly expanding the farm. Ropes and floating equipment had to be positioned carefully so they would not interfere with small fishing boats. In addition, heavy growth in one area could change how much light reached the water below. The members realized that producing more seaweed did not automatically mean that the bay’s environment was improving. They needed to consider conditions for other organisms and the effects of the farm’s equipment.
Before adding more cultivation lines, the cooperative planned to consult boat operators and survey nearby habitats. It also proposed comparing areas with and without seaweed farming while recording seasonal changes. The organizers concluded that farming could provide economic opportunities, but long-term value depended on choosing suitable locations and monitoring the surrounding environment rather than maximizing the harvest alone.

Original passage(慶英会作成)
A packaging start-up developed a thin film using ingredients extracted from cultivated seaweed. Its designers hoped that the material could replace some single-use plastic wrapping for dry products. In small demonstrations, the film could be shaped around boxes and labels without tearing. Retailers were interested in reducing visible plastic waste, and the company began preparing a trial with several local shops.
The development team nevertheless faced important limitations. Some versions of the film absorbed moisture and lost strength under humid conditions. Other versions required additional processing, which increased production costs and electricity consumption. The company also recognized that whether a package had a lower overall environmental impact depended on sourcing, transport, use, and disposal. A material made from a natural ingredient could not simply be described as harmless under all circumstances.
The trial therefore focused initially on products that would remain dry. The start-up arranged tests of durability and disposal conditions, while retailers collected feedback about product protection and customer convenience. Managers postponed claims about broad environmental superiority until they had comparable information from the entire packaging process. They argued that replacing plastic responsibly required evidence about practical performance as well as environmental effects.

問9. Which products were initially suitable for the trial? (A) Items that would stay dry (B) All frozen liquids without containers (C) Products that had to remain underwater (D) Every chemical product in every climate
問10. What happened under humid conditions for some versions? (A) The material became impossible to manufacture at all (B) Shops stopped selling dry products (C) The film absorbed moisture and weakened (D) The film became stronger without limits
問11. Why might additional processing be a disadvantage? (A) It meant that the material was not derived from seaweed (B) It guaranteed zero waste (C) It eliminated transport costs (D) It increased expenses and electricity use
問12. What was needed to assess environmental impact? (A) Information about sourcing, transport, use, and disposal (B) Only the color of the packaging (C) Only its appearance in advertisements (D) A guarantee that all natural ingredients are harmless
問13. What kind of feedback did retailers collect? (A) Only the start-up’s name (B) How well packages protected products and served customers (C) The number of fish in the nearby bay (D) The price of factory land in another country
問14. Why were broad environmental claims postponed? (A) The company had decided never to sell any packaging (B) Every plastic package was already banned (C) Comparable evidence about total impacts was not yet available (D) The products had all disappeared

Original passage(慶英会作成)
A marine research group monitored a seaweed-growing area to investigate how marine plants interacted with carbon in coastal waters. Seaweed used carbon during growth, and researchers could measure changes in its biomass over time. Several local businesses were interested in whether the project could support claims that their activities helped remove carbon from the atmosphere. The researchers welcomed the attention but cautioned that measuring growth alone was not enough to justify such a claim.
Seaweed could be harvested and used in products, eaten by other organisms, or broken down after it died. Carbon absorbed during growth did not necessarily remain stored for a long period. Moreover, the group needed to understand whether changes at the study site were caused by the seaweed project or by natural seasonal conditions. A comparison area could help, but differences in water movement and temperature still made interpretation difficult. The researchers therefore avoided converting every kilogram of growth directly into an equivalent amount of permanent carbon removal.
The team expanded its monitoring plan to include the fate of harvested material, conditions outside the growing area, and uncertainty in its measurements. It also separated statements about plant growth from stronger claims about long-term carbon storage. Local businesses could discuss the project as an experiment in marine research, but they were asked not to advertise unverified climate benefits. The lesson was that environmental promises needed evidence not only of a process occurring, but also of what happened afterward.
15. Why did the research group monitor the site? (A) To investigate seaweed growth and its relation to carbon (B) To guarantee the removal of all atmospheric carbon (C) To close every fishing business (D) To replace school science courses
問16. Why were businesses interested? (A) They wanted to prohibit all marine research (B) They believed seaweed never grows (C) They hoped to make claims about climate benefits (D) They needed to move their shops inland
問17. Why was growth alone insufficient to prove long-term carbon storage? (A) All seaweed carbon disappears immediately (B) Harvest, consumption, or decay can change what happens to absorbed carbon (C) Carbon is never involved in plant growth (D) The team had no tools for measuring biomass
問18. What difficulty remained when using a comparison area? (A) Every comparison site had exactly the same conditions (B) The research group refused to collect measurements (C) All seasonality had already been removed (D) Differences in water movement and temperature complicated interpretation
問19. What conversion did the researchers avoid? (A) Treating every kilogram of growth as permanent carbon removal (B) Comparing growth at different times (C) Recording harvest destinations (D) Measuring conditions outside the farm
問20. What did the expanded monitoring include? (A) Only the number of local businesses (B) Where harvested material went and uncertainty in measurements (C) Only the price of plastic packaging (D) Only the appearance of nearby beaches
問21. What is the passage’s overall message? (A) Any observed growth proves a permanent climate benefit (B) A comparison area removes every uncertainty (C) Environmental claims require evidence about later outcomes as well as initial growth (D) Businesses should advertise all possible benefits immediately
