英検準1級のnot until・only after・never before・little・under no circumstancesの倒置は、「文頭の否定・限定表現」により助動詞やbe動詞が主語より前に出る構文です。
|---|---|---|
| Not until … しなかった | Not until Monday did we receive the report. |
| Only after / Only when | ~の後・ときに初めて | Only after the test did she understand. |
| Never before / Rarely / Seldom | それまで決してない・まれにしかない | Never before had we seen it. |
| Little | ほとんど知らずに | Little did they know about the cost. |
| Under no circumstances | いかなる場合も~しない | Under no circumstances may visitors enter. |
| Only by | ~することによって初めて | Only by checking can we confirm it. |
| Not only … but also | ~だけでなく…も | Not only did they test it, but they also reviewed it. |
Not until the inspection ended did the bridge reopen. Only if you revise it can you improve.

A small coastal town introduced a warning system for heavy storms. During a severe rainstorm, a message was sent later than residents had expected. Not until engineers examined the network logs did they identify the source of the delay. The system itself had transmitted the warning correctly, but one outdated contact list had prevented it from reaching several households. Little did town officials know that some residents had changed their phone numbers months earlier. The emergency office then checked the list and offered additional ways to receive alerts. Only after repeated tests did the council authorize the revised system for public use. However, it did not claim that every future warning would arrive without delay. Under no circumstances were staff permitted to release households’ private contact details during the review. Researchers emphasized that the timing of a single warning, the accuracy of contact records, and residents’ actual ability to act on advice were separate matters requiring evaluation.
D1. What did engineers identify only after examining logs?
D2. What had officials largely failed to realize?
D3. When did the council approve the revised system?
D4. Could officials release private contact details during the review?
A public library proposed extending its opening hours to help students who could not visit during the day. Rarely had the library received so many requests for a change to its timetable. Yet the library could not simply remain open every evening: more staff and security measures were required. Not only did the director consult employees, but she also surveyed students about suitable times. The first trial attracted many visitors, although the library did not yet know whether they used its study facilities effectively. Only by examining attendance together with feedback could the team evaluate the program more fairly. At no time during the trial were visitors allowed to enter staff-only storage rooms. A local newspaper described the first month as a complete success, but the director rejected that conclusion. The staff still needed to compare maintenance costs, accessibility, and whether the longer hours reached the students originally intended to benefit. The project demonstrated how a popular service could require careful evaluation beyond simple visitor counts.
D5. What had the library rarely experienced before?
D6. Who did the director consult or survey?
D7. How could the service be evaluated more fairly?
D8. Which area remained inaccessible to visitors?
A1 正解:A did。
B was the city。 was the city permittedが正しい受動態。
B had the district seen。Never before+過去完了の倒置had the district seen。
C did the teachers know。Little(ほとんど~ない)が文頭に出る否定的倒置。did the teachers know。
A5 正解:B may visitors copy。
A6 正解:A does。
C did the engineers。Only thenが文頭なのでdid+the engineers+understandとなる。
A8 正解:A does。
A9 正解:A have。主語the reviewersは複数、現在完了の倒置have the reviewers encountered。
A10 正解:B were。
B should workers ignore。On no account(決して~してはならない)の後はshould+workers+原形ignore。
A12 正解:A can。 can+主語+受動態の原形be identified。
B did the authors。
C were passengers。Only when節の後の主節でbe動詞を倒置。were passengers able to。
A15 正解:B should。Neverを文頭に置く否定倒置ではshould+主語(ここではthe original files)+be altered。
A16 正解:B were。 So serious were the transport delays that…。

D1:The cause of the delayed warning. Not until…did they identifyから、調査後に原因が判明した。
D2:Some residents had changed their phone numbers.
D3:Only after repeated tests.
D4:No; they were never permitted to do so.
D5:So many requests to change opening hours.
D6:Employees and students. 本文根拠:Not only…but alsoの両方を読む。
D7:By considering attendance and feedback together. 本文根拠:Only by…couldの必要な方法を問う。
D8:Staff-only storage rooms. At no time were visitors allowedの禁止対象。
Not until officials checked the records did they identify the problem. Officials identified the problem only after checking the records. Officials identified the problem immediately.

FAQ
Not untilとonly afterは必ず倒置しますか?
We did not know until Monday.
no sooner…thanと同じですか?
