In a fictional town museum, no sooner had the exhibition opened than visitors reported that some labels were difficult to read. The staff revised the labels and planned another inspection. However, the director explained that receiving complaints immediately did not prove that the entire exhibition was poorly designed. The museum wanted feedback from people with different viewing needs before making permanent changes.
D1. Which event happened first?
- Visitors submitted their later feedback.
- The exhibition opened.
- All labels were permanently replaced.
- The museum closed.
D2. What conclusion did the director reject?
- Some visitors had difficulty reading labels.
- The staff revised certain labels.
- Immediate complaints proved the entire exhibition was badly designed.
- Further feedback might be useful.
Hardly had a community center started an evening workshop when a brief power failure interrupted the projector. Staff checked the electrical equipment and resumed the session after the lights returned. Several attendees said the interruption was inconvenient, but engineers warned that the timing alone could not establish that the projector had caused the power failure. They proposed reviewing maintenance records before drawing conclusions.
D3. What happened immediately after the workshop began?
- A brief power failure interrupted the projector.
- A permanent closure was announced.
- The projector was replaced nationwide.
- Every attendee left before the workshop.
D4. Why did engineers want maintenance records?
- The center had no electricity.
- The lights had never returned.
- All equipment was already proven safe.
- Timing alone was insufficient to prove causation.
A fictional university had scarcely published a preliminary survey when another group requested access to the methods. Researchers provided information about the sample and acknowledged that results might change as further responses were collected. D5. Which event took place immediately after publication?
- The university permanently withdrew the report.
- All participants were excluded.
- Another group asked to examine the methods.
- The sample was proven representative.
D6. What did the request signify?

- Other researchers wanted to examine evidence.
- The university had abandoned research.

No sooner had the council announced a revised road schedule than several business owners asked how deliveries would be affected. D7. What followed the council’s announcement?
- Questions from business owners about deliveries.
- The immediate completion of all roadwork.
- The cancellation of every delivery.
- The permanent closure of the road.
D8. What was the council’s position on those questions?

応用|No soonerとOnly afterは何が違うか
No sooner had the team arrived than it started to rain. Only after the team arrived did it start to rain.

hardly/scarcely/barelyはwhenと組み合わせます。
過去完了が一般的ですが、No sooner did … than …
As soon as the train arrived, …
