can’t / couldn’t have done~したはずがない不可能だという強い判断
may / might have done~したかもしれないまだ確定していない可能性

A town closed a footbridge after inspectors noticed damage near one support. The engineering office reviewed earlier maintenance records to determine when the damage might have begun. One official claimed that the bridge must have been unsafe for years, but the team had insufficient evidence to confirm that conclusion. The damage may have developed recently, or it might have existed longer without being detected. Engineers agreed that the town should have scheduled a more detailed inspection when unusual vibrations were first reported. The review also showed that staff had ordered replacement equipment in advance. They needn’t have purchased one expensive component, because tests later showed that it was not required. If inspectors had compared the earlier photographs, they could have identified some visible changes sooner. Nevertheless, this did not prove that an earlier repair would definitely have prevented the closure. The council decided to separate confirmed observations, uncertain explanations and recommendations in its final report, so readers would not mistake a possible cause for an established fact.

D1. What did the official say with stronger certainty than the evidence supported?

D2. What action did engineers believe should have happened earlier?

D3. What purchase was judged unnecessary after it had been made?

D4. Could an earlier repair definitely have prevented the closure?

A secondary school launched an online archive of science worksheets. At first, only a few students used the new site, and administrators wondered why participation was low. One teacher said the students must have disliked digital learning. Another suggested that some pupils might not have known the site existed. A survey later revealed that several families had not received the announcement because contact lists were outdated. The school should have checked those lists before launching the service. It also found that some printable worksheets had been duplicated unnecessarily. Staff needn’t have uploaded identical copies to different folders, since one clearly labeled copy would have been sufficient. If the school had introduced the archive during orientation, students could have become familiar with it sooner. However, the survey did not prove that the platform itself was unpopular. The principal revised the public report, distinguishing the possible explanations that had been discussed from the information actually confirmed by the survey. The school then improved its notices and asked students to test the search functions.

D5. Which claim was too strong at the beginning?

D6. What possible cause was later confirmed?

D7. What unnecessary action did the school take?

D8. What could have made students familiar with the archive sooner?

A1 正解:B must have。

A3 正解:A may not have。『届いていないかもしれない』はmay not have received。

A4 正解:D should have。

A6 正解:A could have。

A7 正解:C couldn’t have。

A8 正解:D could have。

A10 正解:C can’t have。

A11 正解:C needn’t have。

B1:The audit log shows an edit, and the file’s contents differ from the previous version. Someone must have changed the file.

B2:They cannot have attended the in-person meeting because they were all abroad.

B3:The message may not have arrived because of the server problem. ポイント:不確かな否定の可能性=may not have。

B4:She should have read the material more carefully.

B5:They needn’t have bought the additional equipment.

B6:They could have arrived on time if they had left ten minutes earlier.

B7:The project would have begun if the funding had been approved.

B8:The difference may have been due to chance because the evidence is insufficient.

C1:The samples were safely stored, but they may have been spoiled; it is only a remote possibility. may have等へ修正。

C2:The doors were locked and monitored all night, so the visitor could not have entered unnoticed. 理由:不可能だと判断する場合はmay haveでなくcould not have。

C3:The teacher should have prepared a backup, but she forgot to make one. 理由:shouldの後はhave+過去分詞preparedであり、should had preparedは文法的に誤り。

C4:The school needn’t have ordered extra chairs, but it did and later regretted the expense.

C5:If the museum had extended the hours, it might have welcomed more visitors.

C6:The researchers would have located the error yesterday if they had checked the records two days ago.

C7:The council did not approve the plan; the official minutes confirm that it rejected it.

C8:The company did not need to pay for insurance, and it never made the payment. 理由:行為自体がなかった場合はdid not need toと明示。

D1:That the bridge must have been unsafe for years.

D2:A more detailed inspection after unusual vibrations were reported.

D3:One expensive replacement component.

D4:No. That outcome was not established.

D5:Students must have disliked digital learning.

D6:Some families had not received the announcement because contact records were outdated. 本文根拠:may not have knownと古い連絡先が関係していた。

D7:Uploading identical copies of worksheets to multiple folders.

D8:Introducing it during orientation.

The damage may have developed recently. The damage must have developed recently.
