For more than a century, warehouses beside the fictional town of Merrow Bay had stored goods arriving by ship. As trading patterns changed, many of the buildings became empty. A development company proposed converting three warehouses into offices and workshops, arguing that the project would attract businesses while keeping the waterfront lively. However, the plans required replacing several original windows and removing part of an interior wall. Local historians questioned whether the buildings would still tell the same story after those changes.
Supporters of the project pointed out that an unused building also faces risks. Roofs deteriorate, maintenance is postponed, and eventually an owner may decide that demolition is cheaper than repair. They argued that a new purpose could provide the income needed to preserve the structures. Yet preservation specialists distinguished between changes that could later be reversed and changes that would permanently remove historic materials. They suggested documenting the original features before any construction began.
After months of discussion, the town council approved a limited trial in one warehouse rather than the entire complex. The company agreed to retain the main wooden beams and to install new partitions that could be removed without damaging them. An independent group would examine the building after its first year of operation and report whether the alterations had affected its historical character. The council emphasized that economic activity and preservation need not be opposing goals, but it refused to assume that every proposed renovation was equally acceptable.
Q1. What concerned local historians about the proposal?
- A. The warehouses would be moved to another town.
- B. Alterations might weaken the buildings’ historical significance.
- C. The port had never handled commercial goods.
- D. The company planned to close every business nearby.
Q2. Why did some people support giving the buildings new purposes?
- A. Rental income could help finance their upkeep.
- B. All historic structures had become unsafe.
- C. New partitions would make maintenance unnecessary.
- D. Every original feature would be replaced.
Q3. What distinction did preservation specialists make?
- A. Between commercial ships and fishing boats.
- B. Between offices and homes.
- C. Between alterations that could be undone and permanent losses.
- D. Between buildings owned by companies and those owned by residents.
Q4. What did the council approve?
- A. Immediate renovation of all three buildings.
- B. Demolition of one warehouse after a year.
- C. An unrestricted building program.
- D. A trial conversion of one warehouse, followed by evaluation.
Q5. Which view best summarizes the council’s position?
- A. Preservation should always prevent economic activity.
- B. New uses and conservation may coexist if changes are assessed carefully.
- C. The original interior features have no historical value.
- D. Every commercial proposal should be accepted to avoid decline.

In the fictional city of Alderfield, a museum displayed a set of carved wooden panels whose labels described them as gifts from private collectors. During a review of old records, curators discovered that the panels had passed through several dealers decades earlier. Although the documents showed who had possessed the objects, they did not establish whether the people who originally made them had agreed to their removal. The museum therefore began a project to investigate the panels’ provenance, or ownership history.
Some visitors assumed that proving the museum’s present legal title would settle the debate. Community representatives argued otherwise. They explained that an object can have cultural meaning beyond its market price, and that the circumstances surrounding its departure matter even when modern ownership documents appear valid. At the same time, the representatives did not all request the same outcome: some favored a permanent return, while others supported shared exhibitions and digital access for students in their community.
Rather than making an immediate public promise, the museum invited representatives to examine the records and identify missing information. It also changed its labels to distinguish established facts from unresolved questions. The review might eventually lead to an agreement about where the panels should be kept, but staff said that no decision had yet been reached. Their immediate objective was to make the process more transparent and to avoid presenting an incomplete history as a settled account.
Q6. What was missing from the museum’s historical records?
- A. Any evidence that the panels existed.
- B. The names of all current museum staff.
- C. Proof that the original makers agreed to the panels’ removal.
- D. Records of the building’s renovation.
Q7. Why did community representatives challenge the legal-title argument?
- A. Because cultural significance and past circumstances also deserved consideration.
- B. Because museums are never allowed to own cultural objects.
- C. Because the market price had recently fallen.
- D. Because all representatives wanted the panels destroyed.
Q8. What did the passage say about representatives’ preferences?
- A. They unanimously demanded immediate return.
- B. They completely rejected digital access.
- C. They agreed that the museum should keep the panels forever.
- D. They differed on whether return or other arrangements were preferable.
Q9. What was one immediate change made by the museum?
- A. It sold the panels to a private dealer.
- B. It revised labels to separate facts from unanswered questions.
- C. It announced a final ownership agreement.
- D. It removed all records from public view.
Q10. What is the main purpose of the review at this stage?
- A. To justify the highest possible sale price.
- B. To prove that every past dealer acted illegally.
- C. To improve transparency before deciding on a final outcome.
- D. To end discussions with the source community.

When the fictional town of Northbridge planned an exhibition about its former textile industry, organizers found that written records described factory production but said little about workers’ everyday experiences. They invited retired employees to record interviews about working conditions, friendships, and changes in family life. The interviews offered details that payroll lists and company reports had never captured, and they helped younger residents imagine what the town had once been like.
Nevertheless, the project team warned that memories are not perfect substitutes for documents. Two people may remember the same event differently, especially after many years. Some interviewees also spoke about colleagues who had not agreed to be identified publicly. To protect participants, organizers asked each speaker to review the recording and specify which sections could be shared. When accounts conflicted, researchers compared them with photographs, local newspapers, and other interviews rather than selecting the most dramatic story.
The exhibition eventually displayed extracts from the approved recordings alongside written sources. Visitors could see both areas of agreement and details that remained uncertain. Organizers did not claim that the interviews represented every former worker, because participation had been voluntary and some people were no longer available to speak. Instead, the exhibition described oral histories as a way to broaden the record while acknowledging gaps. By showing how the evidence had been gathered, the town hoped to encourage visitors to question simple stories about the past rather than memorize a single version of events.
Q11. Why did the organizers conduct interviews?
- A. Written records gave limited information about workers’ daily lives.
- B. All production figures had been lost.
- C. Every former employee refused to share documents.
- D. They wanted to replace the exhibition with a factory.
Q12. What concern arose when interviewees mentioned colleagues?
- A. The factory was still operating.
- B. The interview equipment was too expensive.
- C. Those colleagues might not have consented to being publicly named.
- D. The exhibition had no younger visitors.
Q13. How did researchers handle conflicting memories?
- A. They selected whichever story was most dramatic.
- B. They compared interviews with additional sources.
- C. They deleted every recording.
- D. They assumed that written sources were always wrong.
Q14. Why did organizers avoid claiming that every worker was represented?
- A. They had found records from every worker.
- B. The factory had employed very few people.
- C. Participants were randomly selected from every age group.
- D. The interviews were voluntary, and some former workers could not participate.
Q15. What broader lesson did the exhibition aim to teach?
- A. Historical questions should have only one approved answer.
- B. Personal memories are always more accurate than photographs.
- C. Evidence should be examined with attention to its sources and limitations.
- D. Uncertainty makes every historical record worthless.
