A coastal town wanted to publish a guide to flood risks. Residents sent dozens of photographs claiming to show water levels during an earlier storm. Some pictures looked plausible, but the town could not treat all of them as authentic. Staff checked the dates and locations of the photographs against original files, and experts confirmed that several had been altered. The town then consulted credible researchers who had published work on local rainfall. These researchers gave the town a model and the original measurements, allowing independent specialists to verify the calculations. The model offered a plausible explanation for why certain streets flooded more often, but the researchers said further observations were necessary before drawing firm conclusions. At a public meeting, officials presented convincing evidence that the new guide would help residents identify evacuation routes, while explicitly avoiding a claim that the guide would prevent future floods.

D1. Why were some photographs rejected?

D2. What made the rainfall calculations verifiable?

D3. Did the model prove why every street flooded?

D4. What did officials claim the guide could help people do?

A local museum received a letter said to have been written by a famous scientist. The handwriting resembled known examples, so the claim initially seemed plausible. However, the curator refused to describe the letter as authentic until specialists had examined the paper, ink, and historical context. Researchers later found that the paper was produced decades after the scientist’s death. That discovery was convincing evidence against the letter’s claimed origin. The museum published a detailed report, including photographs and chemical-test methods, so that other researchers could verify its findings. A credible archival historian also explained how forged letters could spread through online marketplaces. The museum concluded that an apparently plausible story, a genuinely authentic object, and verifiable evidence were three separate matters.

D5. Why was the letter’s origin initially considered plausible?

D6. What evidence weighed against authenticity?

D7. How did the museum make its findings verifiable?

D8. Was the letter ultimately authenticated?

The scientists offered a plausible explanation for the pattern, but further measurements were needed.。この文をScientists proved the cause of the pattern. Scientists proposed a possible explanation, although further measurements were required.
