Suppose we had more time.

assumeにはassume responsibility(責任を引き受ける)という別の重要な意味もあります。

A city council wanted to understand why one neighborhood had become hotter than nearby areas. At the start of its budget model, officials assumed that electricity prices would remain unchanged for a year. That was a simplifying assumption, not a prediction that prices would definitely stay constant. Meteorologists then hypothesized that a lack of street trees contributed to the temperature difference. They installed sensors to test the idea by comparing streets with different amounts of shade. Some commentators speculated that a newly opened shopping center was solely responsible, but they offered no supporting measurements. Because daytime temperatures had been high for several summers, residents presumed that the next summer might also be hot, though nobody could know for certain. At a public workshop, the facilitator asked, ‘Suppose the city planted trees on every main road. What other effects would need to be studied?’ The group agreed that a testable hypothesis, a numerical assumption, an informal speculation, and a hypothetical question served different purposes.

D1. What was assumed in the initial budget model?

D2. What hypothesis did meteorologists plan to test?

D3. Why did commentators’ claim about the shopping center remain speculation?

D4. Did the workshop question establish that every road would get more trees?

A secondary school noticed that fewer books were borrowed in winter. The principal asked teachers to assume that the number of students was constant when calculating borrowing rates, so the first model would be easier to interpret. Librarians presumed that heavy examination schedules were partly responsible, as the busiest weeks coincided with the steepest decline. Researchers considered this explanation plausible, but they did not present it as established fact. They hypothesized that providing short reading periods during school hours might increase borrowing and designed a comparison between two groups of classes. Some parents speculated online that the library was about to close, although the school had announced no such plan. During a class discussion, a teacher asked, ‘Suppose every student could borrow digital books from home. What might change?’ The students distinguished this imagined scenario from the actual experiment and from the unsupported rumor.

D5. What assumption was used in the initial calculation?

D6. On what basis did librarians presume examinations were involved?

D7. What testable hypothesis did researchers propose?

D8. Was the library-closing claim supported by a school announcement?

C|訂正8問

C1:The calculations assume that prices will remain unchanged for the next year.

C2:Suppose that everyone could travel for free. How would society change?

C3:Under the rule, each applicant is presumed honest unless there is evidence to the contrary.

C4:The guests speculated about the hidden plan without access to any evidence.

C5:The scientists hypothesized that a new chemical caused the disease and designed a controlled experiment to test the causal link.

C6:The manager assumed responsibility for compliance after taking office.

C7:The teacher said, ‘Suppose we had unlimited time. What would you design?’

C8:Commentators speculated about the unverified online rumor without evidence or a plan to test it.

D1:That electricity prices would remain unchanged for a year.

D2:A lack of street trees contributed to higher temperatures.

D3:They offered no supporting measurements.

D4:No. It presented a hypothetical possibility for discussion.

D5:That the number of students remained constant.

D6:The busiest examination weeks coincided with the sharpest fall in borrowing.

D7:Short in-school reading periods might increase book borrowing.

D8:No. It was an unsupported rumor repeated by some parents.

Scientists hypothesized that reduced rainfall caused the decline, but they had not yet tested the explanation.。これをScientists proved that low rainfall caused the decline. Researchers proposed a rainfall-related explanation, although tests were still needed.

Governments should not base important policies on speculation alone. They should collect evidence, test plausible explanations, and make clear which assumptions are used in their plans.(政府は根拠の乏しい憶測だけで重要政策を決めるべきではない。
