使える英語表現|Both・While・However・Neither

Both groups recognize that …(両者とも〜と認める)、While A proposes …, B recommends …(Aが〜を提案する一方Bは〜を勧める)、However, … remains undecided.(ただし〜は未決定)、Neither text proves that …(どちらの本文も〜を証明していない)などが使えます。

School Library Committee — Proposal. The committee proposes keeping the library open until 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of closing at 5:00. In a voluntary survey, 48 of 80 respondents said the current hours were inconvenient. Supporters believe extra opening time would help students complete research projects before going home. The committee suggests trying the schedule for four weeks and recording daily visitor numbers. It has not estimated the cost of additional staffing.

Library Staff — Response. Staff members agree that some students need a quiet place after lessons. However, the library currently has only one employee available after 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. Staff recommend a two-week trial on Thursdays only, with a teacher present from 5:00 to 6:00. They also ask the committee to compare actual attendance with the staff time required. They have not rejected longer hours permanently, but they want evidence from a smaller trial first.

Both groups recognize students’ need for study space after school. The committee proposes a four-week extension on two weekdays, while library staff prefer a two-week Thursday trial because staffing is limited. They agree that visitor numbers should be checked, but the final schedule and costs remain undecided.

Science Club — First Report. During one dry week, the club compared two garden beds containing the same type of vegetable. Bed A received water every morning, while Bed B received water every other morning. At the end of the week, the leaves in both beds looked healthy. The club therefore suggested that watering less often might save water without harming the plants. However, it measured neither soil moisture nor total water use. The club did not claim that the result would hold throughout the year.

Environmental Committee — Follow-up Plan. The committee welcomes the idea of conserving water but warns that one week of observations is not enough to decide a permanent schedule. It suggests recording soil moisture, rainfall and the amount of water used for three more weeks. Because the two beds may receive different amounts of sunlight, the committee also wants to note how many hours of sun each bed gets. It supports further testing rather than immediately reducing watering in every school garden.

The science club observed healthy leaves in two beds watered at different frequencies and suggested that less frequent watering might save water. The environmental committee welcomes conservation but recommends more measurements of moisture, rainfall, water use and sunlight. Both texts support investigation, not a proven year-round watering rule.

Student Editors — Digital Newspaper Proposal. Students currently print 200 copies of the school newspaper each term. The editors propose adding a digital edition so students who are absent can read school news at home. They want the edition to include articles, drawings and photographs from school events. The editors believe it could reduce paper use, but no comparison of printing and digital costs has been completed. They propose allowing readers to send comments through a school-managed form.

School Office — Publication Guidelines. The office supports accessible school news but says students’ names and photographs must be handled according to school permission rules. It recommends publishing articles and drawings first, while postponing photographs until permissions have been checked. Comments should be reviewed before they appear publicly.

The student editors propose a digital newspaper to improve access and possibly reduce paper use. The school office supports wider access but requires permission checks for photos and review of public comments. It also favors retaining print copies for families with limited internet access, so the project should begin with a careful trial.

Student Survey — English Study Sessions. In an optional survey completed by 60 students, 34 wanted a short English study session before club activities, 18 preferred an online question box, and 8 did not want extra support. Respondents could select only one preferred option. Several students said that they needed help with reading instructions rather than vocabulary lists. The survey shows preferences among respondents, but it did not measure whether grades would improve.

Teachers’ Plan — Four-Week Pilot. Teachers propose offering two 20-minute in-person sessions each week for four weeks. One session would focus on reading questions and identifying evidence, and the other would focus on writing short answers in complete sentences. The teachers also plan to collect anonymous feedback after each session. They have not promised to create an online question box yet. Attendance would be voluntary, and the effectiveness of the sessions would be assessed using new practice questions instead of repeating identical questions.

Among 60 survey respondents, short in-person study sessions were the most popular option. Teachers propose testing two 20-minute sessions each week for four weeks, focusing on evidence-based reading and complete-sentence answers. The trial is voluntary, and new questions will be used to check learning; improved grades have not yet been demonstrated.

NEW TREASURE
