初めて紹介するThere isと、すでに特定できるIt：There is a red notebook on the desk. It is Ken’s.なら最初にノートの存在を示し、次のItがそのノートの持ち主を説明します。同じThere isを連続して使えば何でも説明できるわけではありません。

天気と時間：What time is it? — It is nine.／What is the weather like? — It is sunny.は代表的な非人称のItを使った表現です。There is nine o’clock.やThere are sunny.はこの意味では不適切です。

単数・複数：There is one book.／There are three books.のように、存在する人・物が単数か複数かを確認してbe動詞を選びます。過去ならThere was a book.／There were three books.と時制が変化します。

長文ではItが何を指すかが重要です。The library has a computer room. It is open from ten to four.なら、前後の文脈からパソコン室の利用時間であると読み取ります。Itを機械的に『図書館そのもの』と訳すと、施設ごとの営業時間を誤解することがあります。
