英検4級のThere is・There areを学んだら、過去の存在を表すThere was・There wereにも進みましょう。There was a library here ten years ago.は「10年前ここに図書館があった」、There were three children in the room.は「部屋に子どもが三人いた」です。重要なのは過去か現在か、後ろの名詞が単数か複数かを同時に確かめることです。

There was・There were・There wasn’t・There weren’t

There was a student.とThere were students.では後ろの名詞が変わっています。there自体は形式的な主語として使われますが、存在する物や人が単数・複数のどちらかでbe動詞の形を選ぶことが基本です。

昔と今の対比ではten years ago／last year／yesterdayは過去、now／todayは現在を示す重要な手掛かりです。There were no books yesterday, but there are three books now.のように一文で両方の時制が出ても、状態をそれぞれ確認しましょう。

例えばThere was only one table last year.とThere are two tables now.なら、時点・数・動詞を一緒に記録します。長文ではold library／new library、Room 204／Room 208など対象そのものが変わることもあります。同じ数字が出ても別の対象のものではないか確認しましょう。

現在の存在と地図の基本はThere is・There areと場所表現40問、名詞の複数形は不規則複数形36問へ。英検4級の正式な過去問は英検協会の公式ページで確認できます。

後ろの名詞が単数ならwas、複数ならwereを使います。時点も過去であることを確認してください。

Q. Was there three students?は正しいですか。

three studentsは複数なのでWere there three students?が基本です。

過去のその場所には本が一冊もなかった、という意味です。
