8方角の覚え方 ／ 5図40問 ／ 全問の正解・根拠 ／ 7日間復習
north・south・east・westと8方角の基本
図では上がnorth（北）、下がsouth（南）、右がeast（東）、左がwest（西）です。斜めは northeast（北東）、northwest（北西）、southeast（南東）、southwest（南西）。図を時計として覚えるのではなく、上下左右の2つを足して理解しましょう。
The library is north of the station.（図書館は駅の北にある）／ The hospital is east of the station.（病院は駅の東にある）／ The park is southwest of the station.（公園は駅の南西にある）。A is north of B は『AはBの北』で、主語と比較先を逆にしないことが重要です。
この5つの模式図は、それぞれの正方形が一つの区画を表す学習用の架空配置です。隣の区画へ『1マス』進むというルールで解いてください。道路や実際の移動時間・営業状況を表す地図ではありません。

会話・長文で地図を使うときの注意
実際の英検4級では、道案内を聞いて目的地を選んだり、掲示に書かれた位置関係を理解したりする基礎力が必要になります。英語が north of / south of と言っているときは、位置関係を表す of の後ろに『基準になる場所』が続くことを意識しましょう。
次に進む場合は、まず自分で架空の学校を9区画に配置し、The science lab is north of the main hall. のように英語で説明します。英検4級の試験そのものにこの3×3図が出るわけではありません。
7日間の短時間復習
1日目は地図1、2日目は地図2、3日目は地図3、4日目は地図4、5日目は地図5を各8問解きます。6日目はnorth/south/east/westを英語だけで判断し、7日目は地図の名称を入れ替えて他の人に8問出してください。最後に公式の過去問で道案内・施設案内の文章を確認します。
よくある質問
north of と to the north of は同じですか。
位置関係を表すとき、A is north of B. と A is to the north of B. はどちらも使えます。意味は『AはBの北にある』です。
northeast と northwest の違いは何ですか。
northeast は北＋東で右上、northwest は北＋西で左上です。日本語の北東・北西と同じ順番です。
英検4級では地図の5図40問が出ますか。
いいえ。この教材は慶英会独自の反復演習です。英検協会が定めた出題形式ではありません。公式の形式と難度は過去問で確かめてください。
