英検3級の短文空所補充や英作文で「比較級・最上級」が混乱するときは、何と何を比べているか／同じくらいなのか／いちばんを示すのかを先に見ます。tall→taller→tallestのような規則変化だけでなく、interesting→more interesting→most interesting、good→better→best、as … as のような表現まで使い分ける必要があります。慶英会では、基礎説明から4択32問＋記述8問＝独自40問、全解答・根拠・14日復習まで、無料で学べる教材を用意しました。
最初の結論：thanを見たら比較級、the＋「最も」に当たる形なら最上級、as … asの間には原級、goodの比較級はbetterです。ただしthat was the better of the twoなど実際の英文には例外的な言い回しがあり、決まった単語だけで判定するのではなく文全体の意味を確認します。中学卒業程度の文法として英検3級の読解・作文に役立ちますが、この文法が独立大問として毎回出るという意味ではありません。

比較級の形は語数だけでは必ずしも決まらず、英単語によって複数の形が認められる場合もあります。中学生の基礎学習では上記の代表形から確実に使い、初見の単語は辞書で確認しましょう。特にmore better / more easier / most tallestは比較の形を二重にしている典型的な誤りです。
thanがあるのに最上級？｜文の意味を先に確かめる
This bag is heavier than that one.は2つのかばんを直接比較します。一方、This is the heaviest bag in the store.は店内のかばんの中で最も重いものを示します。比較する対象の数と範囲が違います。one of the＋最上級＋複数名詞のような形では、one of the most famous citiesと複数形を忘れないでください。
同じくらいを言うas … as の語順
My bike is as fast as yours.は「私の自転車はあなたのものと同じくらい速い」。notを加えるとMy bike is not as fast as yours.「あなたのものほど速くない」となります。as … asの中央に入れるのは原級であり、faster / most fastを入れません。数量を表すならas many books as …（可算名詞複数）とas much water as …（不可算名詞）を区別します。
副詞も比較する｜faster・better・harder
比較するものは人や物の性質だけではありません。He runs faster than I do.は走る速さ、She speaks English better than I do.は英語を話す上手さの比較です。fastやhardは形容詞と副詞で同じ綴りを使います。一方、goodは形容詞で「よい」、wellは副詞として「上手に」などの意味で、どちらも比較級betterを使う場合があります。
独自40問｜4択32問と英作文・書き換え8問
最初に問題だけ解き、解答は末尾を開いて確認します。問1〜32は4択、問33〜40は記述で英文を作ります。選択肢の単語を覚えて当てるのではなく、「比較する対象」「原級か比較級か」「最上級か」を一言で説明してください。
-er / -est｜比較級と最上級の基本（8問）
短い形容詞・副詞の比較では語尾に-er / -estを付ける場合があります。big→bigger→biggest、easy→easier→easiestの綴りに注意。

比較表現を長文の中で読み取る
例えば次の短文を考えましょう。Our school has two libraries. The old library has eight hundred books, while the new one has fourteen hundred. The new library is larger, but it closes one hour earlier. Rina often studies at the old library after club activities because it stays open until seven.
この文ではlarger（広い）とcloses earlier（閉館が早い）は異なる情報です。新図書館のほうが広くても、リナが使うのは閉館が遅い旧図書館です。比較級の単語だけを訳さず、何を比較しているかと、その後の行動の理由を読み取ります。
英検3級の意見英作文で使える比較表現
英検3級の意見英作文は公式の目安語数25〜35語です。比較表現は理由を伝えるときに役立ちますが、難しい表現を無理に入れることより、質問に答えて理由を2つ書くことを優先します。例えば次の短い英文を参考に、実際の自分の考えに合わせて表現しましょう。
I like studying with friends. I have two reasons. First, it is more interesting than studying alone. Second, we can help each other when we have difficult questions.

よくある質問
比較級は必ずthanを付けますか？
いいえ。比較対象が文脈で分かる場合など、thanを明示しない形もあります。最初はA is bigger than B.のような基本形を習得し、文の意味から判断します。
more easier、most tallestは間違いですか？
一般的な比較級・最上級の形としては不適切です。easy→easier→easiest、tall→taller→tallestが基礎形です。
as … asには比較級が入りますか？
通常、同等比較のas … asには形容詞や副詞の原級を入れます。as fast as、not as expensive asのように使います。
