Dear Science Club Members, Our city planetarium will hold a Student Astronomy Evening on Saturday, November 28. The public program starts at 6:00 p.m., but student teams presenting posters must arrive at the east entrance between 4:45 and 5:05 p.m. The planetarium will supply display boards and tables. Each team should bring its printed poster and a copy of the permission form signed by its teacher.

A teacher must register each team by Wednesday, November 25, at noon. Only four teams can give short presentations. An automatic email means that the form was received; it does not guarantee that a team was selected. Accepted teams will receive a separate confirmation on Thursday afternoon. Students who are not selected are still welcome to attend the public program, but they must reserve visitor seats online.

The original plan was to use the main dome for the presentations. However, a projector inspection will take place there, so the presentations have been moved to the first-floor learning room. The public program will still start at six. If anyone needs step-free access, please contact our office by Friday morning. We hope to see you there. — Planetarium Education Team

Small weather stations are becoming more affordable, and some towns have invited volunteers to measure local temperatures. Such projects can add information from neighborhoods far from official observation points. They may also help students become interested in science. However, collecting many numbers is not the same as collecting reliable evidence.

In one town, volunteers initially placed thermometers in different locations. Some were beside concrete walls, while others stood in shaded gardens. Several people recorded temperatures in the morning, but others measured in the afternoon. The reports appeared to show large differences between neighborhoods. A university researcher explained that the equipment locations and observation times might be responsible for part of the difference.

The town then provided identical instruments and asked participants to take readings at eight in the morning each day. A short guide explained how to place sensors away from heated walls. Printed instructions remained available for people without smartphones. After several weeks, the records were easier to compare, but researchers still wanted data from different seasons before claiming that one neighborhood was consistently warmer than another.

Which statement best expresses the passage’s main idea?

  1. Low-cost equipment always guarantees perfect data
  2. Volunteer data become more useful when measurement conditions are consistent

Roads and railway lines sometimes divide the places where wild animals live. Some towns build narrow green paths under bridges so small animals can move between parks without crossing busy roads. Supporters hope these connections will protect local wildlife, but a path that looks useful to people may not always be used by animals.

In one project, volunteers installed motion-sensitive cameras near two green passages. They recorded several animals using the first passage but only a few using the second. At first, the town believed the first passage had been designed better. Later, researchers noticed that one camera had been operating at night while the other had been turned off for several hours. Rainfall also differed between the weeks when the passages were observed.

The town decided to use the same camera settings and observe both passages during matching periods. It also planned to check whether nearby lights disturbed nocturnal animals. Officials will not expand the program until they have compared costs, animal activity, and maintenance needs over more than one season. The goal is to provide safe routes based on evidence rather than assumptions.

What is the central concern of the passage?

  1. Providing new parking spaces for visitors
  2. Replacing every public park with roads
  3. Making cameras more expensive

Several schools offer short visits to local workplaces so students can learn how people use knowledge outside the classroom. At a community hospital, students may watch nonmedical administrative tasks, while engineering offices may explain how designs are checked. Such programs can introduce career options that young people have not considered before.

One school expanded its visits from two locations to six. Students reported enjoying the new activities, and some said they felt more interested in future work. However, the teachers were careful not to claim that the program had improved students’ career decisions. More visits did not necessarily mean that students understood the jobs, and the school had mainly surveyed people who had chosen to participate.

To evaluate the program, teachers prepared short questions before and after visits and asked nonparticipants why they had not attended. They also reviewed transportation and supervision costs. The school plans to continue the program next year, but it has not decided whether to add more workplaces. Teachers want to balance interesting experiences with evidence of useful learning.

What is the passage mainly about?
