The start was delayed because the new measuring equipment did not arrive on time. Volunteers must attend a short training session on Saturday morning. Anyone who cannot attend may watch a recording and complete a quiz by Sunday evening.

Please bring a notebook to the training session. The town will provide the equipment, so volunteers do not need to buy a thermometer. During the project, participants will report temperatures and rainfall every evening. Reports should be submitted by 8 p.m., even when there has been no rain.

Residents in Pineford noticed that people often threw away jackets and bags because of small problems, such as missing buttons or broken zippers. A local group opened a monthly repair workshop where volunteers teach basic sewing skills. Participants bring their own items, and simple materials are provided at no charge.

During the first three months, more than one hundred items were brought to the workshop. However, some could not be repaired safely or were too badly damaged. The volunteers recorded how many repairs were attempted but did not measure how much clothing waste was reduced across the whole town.

The organizers hope to offer workshops in another neighborhood. Before doing so, they need more trained volunteers and a place that is accessible by public transport. They also plan to ask visitors whether they continue using the repaired items after several months. According to the group, encouraging practical skills is as important as repairing individual objects.

問28|Why did the group start the workshop?

  1. People were throwing away items with small problems
  2. The town required everyone to make new clothes
  3. No residents had ever learned to sew
  4. A local shop stopped selling jackets

問29|What can be concluded about the first three months?

  1. Every item brought in was repaired
  2. More than one hundred items were brought in
  3. The town’s clothing waste was cut in half
  4. The workshop opened every day

問30|What will the organizers need before expanding?

  1. A ban on public transport
  2. New clothes for every volunteer
  3. More trained helpers and an accessible location
  4. A guarantee that every zipper can be repaired

問31|What do the organizers want to learn from visitors?

  1. Whether they own a car
  2. Whether they have attended every workshop
  3. Whether they prefer a shopping center
  4. Whether they keep using repaired items months later

28:A(People were throwing away items with small problems)。

29:B(More than one hundred items were brought in)。

Many families in Riverside have difficulty preparing for sudden rain because they do not always carry umbrellas. To help them, the town has started a small umbrella-sharing program at three public buildings. Visitors can borrow umbrellas and return them to any participating location.

Supporters believe the service may reduce the need to buy inexpensive umbrellas that are used only once. It may also help people travel more comfortably during unexpected showers. However, staff must check damaged umbrellas and move them between locations when supplies become uneven.

The town has recorded the number of loans but has not yet measured whether purchases or waste have decreased. Officials will review return rates and maintenance costs before deciding whether to add more locations.

A town has introduced umbrella sharing at three public buildings to help people during unexpected rain. Supporters believe the service may reduce unnecessary purchases and make travel easier. However, staff must repair and move umbrellas, and the town has not yet measured waste reduction or assessed the costs of expansion.

TOPIC: Should public places offer free Wi-Fi to visitors?

I think public places should offer free Wi-Fi when they can provide it safely. First, visitors may need internet access to find directions, check transportation, or contact their families. Free connections could be especially useful for people who cannot afford expensive mobile data. Second, public Wi-Fi can help students and travelers access important information while away from home. However, operators should protect personal information and explain how to use the service securely. Some locations may need to limit connection time or provide separate networks. With clear rules and appropriate protection, free Wi-Fi can benefit many visitors.
