Throwing away a broken object is often easier than finding someone to repair it. To change this habit, residents in a small town started a monthly repair café at a community center. Visitors bring items such as lamps, clothing, and wooden chairs, and volunteers explain how repairs can be made. At first, the organizers expected mostly older adults to attend. [18], many teenagers came with their families because they wanted to learn practical skills. The café has clear safety rules. Volunteers do not attempt complicated electrical work without professional training. [19], they direct owners of dangerous equipment to qualified specialists. This policy protects visitors while allowing the group to concentrate on safe repairs. The organizers also record how many objects are repaired and how much material may have been saved. These records help them [20] the project’s effect instead of claiming that every repaired object produces the same environmental benefit. Some items cannot be fixed, but participants still learn to examine problems carefully before buying replacements.

Cities are trying to reduce extreme heat during summer. Trees may help by providing shade and cooling the air as water leaves their leaves. Yet planting trees is not as simple as putting them wherever there is space. A university team placed temperature sensors on different streets to study how trees affect local conditions. The team collected readings at the same times on sunny days. [21], they could compare shaded and unshaded streets more fairly. The researchers noticed that some streets with many trees were cooler than nearby streets, [22] others showed only small differences. Buildings, wind, and pavement materials can also influence temperature. For this reason, the researchers warned city officials not to credit every temperature difference to trees alone. [23], the city plans to combine tree planting with changes to pavement and to keep measuring results for several years. Residents will also be asked which walking routes are most uncomfortable in hot weather.

From: City Science Center
Subject: Information for school groups

Dear Teachers,

Thank you for your interest in our autumn science workshops. Last year, school groups were accepted in the order that their forms arrived. This year, to give more schools a chance, each group may list two preferred workshops. Our staff will confirm one workshop for each group after checking room sizes and equipment. Please do not tell students their first choice is guaranteed.

The workshops will take place on Saturday, November 14, and Sunday, November 15. Groups that cannot travel on Saturday may request Sunday places. Teachers should send the online registration form by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4. After registering, they may correct the number of participating students until noon on Friday, November 6. Requests made after that time may not be possible because the center must prepare safety equipment.

Along many coasts, wetlands have been reduced by roads and buildings. These areas often contain plants that grow in salty water and provide places for fish and birds to live. Some communities are now trying to restore wetlands, hoping to protect wildlife and reduce damage during storms.

In one coastal town, a restoration team removed part of an old barrier that had prevented seawater from reaching a former wetland. The team planted native grasses and created shallow channels so that water could move through the area. After two years, researchers recorded more young fish in several locations than they had seen immediately after construction. They also observed that the grasses helped hold loose soil in place. However, these early observations did not prove that the project had reduced flooding in nearby neighborhoods. Storms during the two years were not equally strong, so the results could not be compared simply.

Some residents were concerned that opening the barrier could make paths wetter or more difficult to use. The team therefore kept one raised walking route and invited residents to report problems. For the next five years, researchers plan to measure water levels, soil movement, and the variety of animals found in the area. They believe that long-term monitoring, rather than a single positive result, is necessary before other towns copy the project.

問28

What was one main purpose of removing the old barrier?

  1. To allow seawater to reach the wetland again.
  2. To prevent fish from entering the wetland.
  3. To make all coastal roads wider.
  4. To stop residents from using the coast.

問29

What did researchers observe after two years?

  1. Flooding had completely disappeared.
  2. All planted grasses had died.
  3. More young fish were recorded in several places.
  4. Every neighboring town had copied the plan.

C. More young fish were recorded in several places.。recorded more young fish in several locations。

Why could researchers not conclude that flooding had decreased?

  1. Residents had not used the raised path.
  2. The storms during the two years were not equally strong.
  3. No water levels had ever been measured.
  4. The barrier was never changed.

B. The storms during the two years were not equally strong.。Storms … were not equally strong。

What will researchers mainly do next?

  1. Replace native plants with imported flowers.
  2. Close every walking path for five years.
  3. Measure only the number of visitors.
  4. Track water, soil, and animal diversity for several years.

D. Track water, soil, and animal diversity for several years.。measure water levels, soil movement, and the variety of animals。

Part 4|Writing①

Many public libraries have begun lending useful objects as well as books. Some provide tools for small home repairs, while others lend musical instruments or educational equipment. The services allow residents to try activities without spending money on items they may rarely use. Families can also explore new hobbies before deciding whether to buy expensive products.

However, lending objects creates different challenges from lending books. Staff members must check that each item is safe and complete when it is returned. Some tools require instructions or training, and repairs can be expensive. Libraries may also face long waiting lists when only a few popular items are available.

To address these issues, several libraries have introduced online reservations and short safety lessons. Some have asked local specialists to help inspect equipment. The programs are still developing, and their success depends on how well libraries balance access, maintenance costs, and the needs of different residents.

Some public libraries lend tools and other equipment, helping residents try hobbies or complete tasks without purchasing rarely used items. However, staff must check safety, cover repair costs, and manage shortages. To address these problems, libraries use reservations, training, and specialist inspections while balancing access with maintenance expenses.

Part 5|Writing②

TOPIC: Do you think schools should give students more opportunities to learn about environmental problems in their local communities?

I agree that schools should provide students with more opportunities to learn about local environmental problems. First, observing a nearby river or park helps students connect scientific ideas with real situations. For example, they can record litter and compare changes over several weeks. Second, local projects can develop communication skills. When students present their findings to residents, they must organize evidence and explain practical suggestions clearly. Such activities should not replace basic lessons, but they can make classroom knowledge more useful and encourage responsible action in the community.
