The graph showed a real increase from 99 to 100. However, its vertical axis began at 98, making the small increase look dramatic. The numbers were correct, but the display could be misleading.

A town surveyed residents about a new evening bus. The online questionnaire received many positive responses, and the council initially described the service as widely supported. However, a teacher pointed out that respondents were mainly people who already used the bus. Residents without reliable internet had fewer opportunities to answer. The committee recognized that its sample might be biased and invited additional people to take part through printed forms. It also planned to record actual passengers after normal fares began. The revised report avoided claiming that the free trial proved long-term demand. Officials wanted objective evidence about operating costs, accessibility, and paid ridership before deciding whether the service was sustainable.

問37|Why might the first survey have been biased?

It mainly included people who already used the bus.

38|What evidence did officials seek for a more objective decision?

Paid ridership, operating costs, and accessibility information.

A science club created a graph showing a change in classroom temperature after windows were opened. The temperature difference was small, but the graph’s vertical axis began very close to the lowest value. Several viewers thought the change was much larger than it actually was. The teacher explained that the graph could be misleading even if every measured number was accurate. Students redesigned it with a clearer scale and described the other conditions that had changed, including the number of people in the room. They also explained that one observation could not prove that opening the windows had caused the entire difference.

問39|Why was the original graph misleading?

Its scale made a small difference appear much larger.

40|What else did the students check?

Other conditions, including room occupancy.

Students researching an old railway station found several websites giving different dates for a photograph. One site did not identify an author or provide a source. Another linked to an official building record showing when a bridge in the picture had been completed. The students decided the second explanation was more credible, but they still checked the record directly. They concluded that the photograph could not be earlier than the bridge’s completion date. They did not invent an exact year. Their teacher praised them for distinguishing verifiable evidence from an attractive story and for stating what remained uncertain.

問41|Why was the second source considered more credible?

It could be checked against an official construction record.

42|What did students avoid doing?

Claiming an exact date not supported by the records.

A secondary school asked pupils whether digital worksheets helped them study. Most online respondents said they were useful, and the first report claimed that almost every student preferred them. A teacher examined the data and found that students with poor internet access rarely answered the online questionnaire. The report was misleading because it described respondents as if they represented the entire school. The school conducted additional interviews and kept printed worksheets available. Its revised conclusion said many respondents appreciated digital lessons, but the evidence did not show that all students could access them equally. Teachers recommended a more objective evaluation of learning outcomes.

問43|What made the first report misleading?

It treated online respondents as representative of all students.

44|What did the school do after reviewing the problem?

Conducted more interviews and retained printed alternatives.
