英検3級Eメールの「When did you hear about it?」と「How did you find out about it?」は、どちらも行事の情報に関係しますが、答える内容が異なります。Whenには知った時点、Howには情報を得た方法・情報源を答えます。慶英会の独自8通40課題で、曜日や日時の表現・ポスター・メール・先生から聞く場合の動詞まで練習します。

結論｜知った日時と情報源を別々に示す

When did you hear about the event? → I heard about it last Monday. / How did you find out about it? → I saw a poster at school.と区別します。Howは『どのように』で、必ずしも人の発言だけを指しません。ポスターを読んだ、サイトで見たなども適切です。

英検協会の3級試験内容を参照しました。3級WritingにはEメール返信1題があり、メール中の2つの質問に答える本文15〜25語が目安です。本記事の受信メール・設問・模範解答は慶英会の独自制作で、公式過去問ではありません。

When・How・Whoを混同しない

質問求められる答え返信例
When did you hear about it?情報を知った時点I heard about it on Monday.
How did you find out about it?知った方法・情報源I saw it on a poster.
Who told you?知らせた人My teacher told me.
Where did you see the notice?告知を見た場所On the school website.

hear aboutは『〜について耳にする・知る』、find out aboutは『〜について知る・情報を得る』です。情報の媒体を明示する場合はfrom an email / on a website / in a newsletter / through a messageなど、状況に合う前置詞を選びましょう。

  1. ①受信メールから「知った時期」の質問を特定
  2. ②「どうやって知ったか」の質問を特定
  3. ③質問2つの短答を英語で作成
  4. ④15〜25語の自然な返信本文を作成
  5. ⑤片方の質問にしか答えない答案を修正

よくある質問

How did you find out about it?には人の名前が必要ですか？

必要とは限りません。ポスター、校内放送、メール、サイト、友人のメッセージなど、知った経路を答えます。

I hear about it yesterdayは正しいですか？

過去の出来事なのでI heard about it yesterday.とします。hearの過去形はheardです。

from a websiteとon a websiteはどちらが正しいですか？

I learned about it from the website.は情報源、I saw the notice on the website.は掲載場所を表し、どちらも自然な文脈があります。
