infer from evidenceは証拠から推測する、conclude that …

A student science team compared river temperatures before and after a new walking path opened. Initially, students assumed the path had changed water quality because the later readings were higher. Their teacher examined the records and found that the measurements had been taken at different times of day and at different depths. After the team repeated the survey under more similar conditions, the difference became smaller. The students inferred that some of the original difference might have resulted from the measurement conditions. They concluded that there was not enough evidence to prove the path was the cause. In their report, they explained how the data should be interpreted and described what remained uncertain.

問37|Why did the students reconsider their first assumption?

The earlier and later measurements had different conditions.

38|What was the final conclusion?

An archive received a photograph labeled as taken in 1916. The picture included a public bridge that official construction records said had been completed in 1928. The curator examined both sources and asked students to interpret the handwritten label carefully. Some students initially assumed that the label must be correct because it looked old. However, the construction record provided stronger evidence about the bridge’s completion. From this, the group inferred that the photograph could not have been taken in 1916 and concluded it must be from 1928 or later. They did not assign an exact year, because the available documents did not provide one. The museum preserved the original label and added a note explaining the reasoning.

問39|What can be inferred from the construction record?

The photograph was taken in 1928 or later.

40|Did the museum determine the precise year?

A secondary school introduced digital worksheets to support homework. Most students who answered an online questionnaire said the materials were convenient. Some teachers assumed the positive responses represented every pupil. However, the questionnaire had mainly reached students who regularly used the school’s website. A teacher interviewed students with unreliable internet and found that several still needed printed worksheets. The school interpreted the results as evidence that digital resources were useful for many respondents but not necessarily for everyone. It concluded that both online and printed options should remain available while it gathered more representative information.

問41|What assumption did the teachers need to reconsider?

That online respondents represented every student.

42|What did the school decide?

A town offered free rides on a new evening bus route during its first week. Passenger numbers rose sharply, and some officials assumed the service would be financially successful. After normal fares began, however, the number of passengers fell. Analysts examined fuel costs, driver hours, and the distance residents had to walk to each stop. They interpreted the early popularity as possible evidence of interest, not proof of long-term demand. The council concluded that the service should continue as a limited trial until it had data from several months of paid operation. Officials said that a final decision required both financial and accessibility evidence.

問43|Why was free-week popularity insufficient evidence?

Passenger numbers dropped when normal fares began.

44|What did the council conclude?

To continue a limited trial while collecting paid-service data.
