Read the passage and summarize its content in English between 90 and 110 words.

Paragraph 1:In the fictional coastal territory of Hartmere, researchers began placing underwater recorders near several shipping routes. Their objective was to understand changes in the soundscape and identify periods when marine animals might be exposed to intense noise. The instruments recorded continuously, while a computer program helped specialists search for patterns resembling animal calls. During the first year, the number of possible calls detected by the system rose considerably, and some observers celebrated this as evidence that wildlife populations were recovering.

Paragraph 2:The research team cautioned against that interpretation. More sensitive software had been introduced halfway through the trial, making sounds that had previously gone undetected easier to identify. Individual animals might also produce many calls, so a larger number of recorded signals did not necessarily represent more animals. Moreover, recordings collected near busy routes could not describe every part of the coastal ecosystem. The team recommended distinguishing probable calls, independently verified calls, the time and location of recording, and other sources of noise.

Paragraph 3:The work also presented practical difficulties. Recorders required regular inspection, and storms sometimes damaged their protective housings. Strong engine noise could conceal biological sounds, while different seabed conditions affected how far signals traveled. Several local fishing groups welcomed the additional information but worried that conclusions based on incomplete recordings might lead to restrictions that did not reflect actual conditions. The researchers agreed to publish methods, limitations, and changes in detection software before proposing any major policy.

Paragraph 4:After a further trial, the team reported that the recordings had improved its understanding of when certain sounds occurred. It did not claim to have established a rise in animal populations or a proven reduction in harm. Regional officials continued the monitoring program and requested comparisons across more seasons and locations. Their decision emphasized that collecting large amounts of acoustic data could be useful, but meaningful environmental protection required reliable interpretation and evidence about actual outcomes.

Should governments require environmental impact assessments before major infrastructure projects? Give THREE reasons to support your opinion. Suggested length: 200–240 words.

Read the passage and summarize its content in English between 90 and 110 words.

Paragraph 1:A fictional university archive began digitizing old laboratory notebooks to help students and historians understand how scientific ideas had developed. Some notebooks contained early hypotheses later rejected by their authors, as well as diagrams and calculations not included in published papers. The project attracted researchers from other institutions, and the archive initially described the growing number of online pages as its main achievement. Supporters argued that wider access could improve education and reveal the complicated process of scientific discovery.

Paragraph 2:Archivists soon discovered that the notebooks required more than scanning. Certain pages contained names or personal details of research participants, while others referred to commercial information covered by continuing agreements. Some handwritten observations were difficult to read, and dates in the existing catalog were occasionally incorrect. The archive created procedures for controlled access and asked specialists to distinguish an author’s preliminary notes from final, verified conclusions. It also retained a record whenever an earlier catalog description was corrected.

Paragraph 3:The project raised questions about how to interpret abandoned ideas. A student reading a rejected hypothesis without context might mistakenly believe that the university still endorsed it. Researchers argued that the original notes should not be silently rewritten, because revisions were themselves part of the historical evidence. Instead, the archive attached explanations identifying later tests, corrections, and unresolved questions. The staff emphasized that access to authentic records could support critical learning only if readers knew what the documents did and did not establish.

Paragraph 4:Costs became a concern as the collection expanded. High-quality imaging, storage, conservation of fragile originals, and review of sensitive materials required trained personnel. Administrators considered releasing more pages quickly, but the archive director preferred prioritizing accurate descriptions and reliable preservation. The final decision was to continue digitization in stages, with independent checks and clearer information about access permissions. Officials concluded that a searchable archive could provide long-term educational value, but the number of files published was not sufficient evidence of quality or trustworthy interpretation.

Should schools teach students how to evaluate conflicting scientific claims? Give THREE reasons to support your opinion. Suggested length: 200–240 words.

模範要約A(99語)

Researchers installed underwater recorders near shipping routes to investigate marine sound patterns and possible noise exposure. Detected animal-like calls increased, but improved software, repeated calls by individual animals, and limited recording locations meant the figures did not demonstrate population recovery. Storm damage, engine noise, and different sound conditions also complicated interpretation. The team documented detection methods and limitations, while fishing groups raised concerns about premature restrictions. Further monitoring clarified when some sounds occurred but did not establish reduced harm or larger populations. Regional officials continued the program, seeking evidence from more seasons and locations before making broader environmental claims.

Introduction:Governments should require credible environmental impact assessments before approving major infrastructure projects. New roads, ports, and energy facilities can bring economic benefits, but they may also create long-lasting changes that are difficult to reverse. Such assessments are justified by better decisions, public accountability, and the prevention of avoidable damage.

Reason 1:First, assessments help identify risks before construction begins. A project may affect waterways, habitats, or nearby residents in ways that are not obvious from its immediate financial benefits. Examining alternatives early can reveal opportunities to reduce harm without abandoning the entire project.

Reason 2:Second, the process can improve public trust. Residents and affected businesses should understand the evidence, assumptions, and remaining uncertainties. Transparent information allows them to raise practical concerns, while decision-makers can explain why certain risks are accepted or addressed.

Reason 3:Third, early analysis may avoid expensive corrections later. Discovering serious problems after a facility has been built can lead to disruption, redesign, or long-term maintenance costs. Although assessments themselves require money and time, proportionate scrutiny may reduce greater future losses.

Conclusion:However, the requirement should reflect the scale of potential harm. Small maintenance projects should not face the same burden as large developments. I support independent review, meaningful consultation, and clear follow-up monitoring so that environmental protection and necessary investment can proceed responsibly.

Set B|

模範要約B(95語)

A university digitized old laboratory notebooks to improve access to the history of scientific discoveries. More pages became available, but archivists found sensitive personal information, uncertain dates, and preliminary ideas that were later rejected. They introduced controlled access, preserved correction histories, and added explanations distinguishing early hypotheses from verified conclusions. Maintaining physical originals, reviewing confidential materials, and preparing accurate descriptions also required resources. Rather than maximizing uploads, the archive continued digitization gradually with independent checks. It concluded that historical records could support education only when reliable context, appropriate permissions, and long-term preservation accompanied online availability.

Set B|

Introduction:Schools should teach students how to evaluate conflicting scientific claims rather than expect them to accept every confident statement. Scientific information affects decisions about health, technology, and the environment, yet evidence may be incomplete or interpreted differently. This education matters for critical thinking, responsible decisions, and public trust.

Reason 1:First, students should learn to distinguish observations from conclusions. A correlation between two events does not automatically establish that one caused the other. Understanding study design, comparison groups, and uncertainty can help students recognize when an explanation goes beyond the available evidence.

Reason 2:Second, evaluating claims encourages independent judgment. Students encounter advertisements and online posts that may highlight dramatic results while omitting limitations. Comparing sources and asking how information was collected can help them make more informed choices without assuming that every disagreement is equally credible.

Reason 3:Third, this skill can strengthen trust in responsible scientific work. Recommendations sometimes change when new evidence becomes available. Learning that correction is part of investigation may reduce the mistaken belief that uncertainty always indicates dishonesty.

Conclusion:However, lessons should remain suitable for students’ ages and support essential scientific knowledge. Teachers can use fictional datasets and carefully explained examples instead of overwhelming learners with technical details. I favor practical activities that reward clear reasoning and honest treatment of limitations rather than memorization of particular opinions.
