  • ①一部を全体化:some → all、may → must、can → alwaysなど。

Several cities are replacing traditional lamps in public parks with adjustable lighting systems. These systems can reduce electricity use by dimming lights when areas are empty, and they may direct light more precisely toward walking paths. Supporters argue that the changes could improve visibility where it is needed while limiting unnecessary illumination. However, the results depend on how the equipment is installed and how the park is used. A poorly positioned lamp may create strong shadows even when its total output is high.

Some residents worry that reducing brightness will make parks less safe after dark. Others argue that excessively bright lighting can disturb nearby households or affect wildlife that depends on natural darkness. Neither concern can be resolved simply by comparing the number of lamps installed. For example, a route that is frequently used by commuters may require different arrangements from a protected wooded area where nighttime access is limited. The balance also changes across seasons as vegetation and the hours of daylight vary.

One municipality has proposed a trial that uses both technical measurements and feedback from park users. Engineers would record visibility on paths, while residents would report whether particular areas feel difficult to navigate. Environmental specialists would monitor the effect on sensitive habitats. The city would then review the results before committing to a larger investment. Critics say public feedback can be subjective, but planners respond that measurements of light alone cannot describe every aspect of people’s experience. Their aim is not to find a universal brightness level, but to identify arrangements suitable for different locations while preserving opportunities for later adjustment.

Q1. What is the passage mainly arguing about park lighting?

  • (A) All parks should use the same brightness settings.
  • (B) Lighting choices should reflect different uses and be evaluated from several perspectives.
  • (C) Adjustable lamps are too unreliable to be installed anywhere.
  • (D) The number of lamps provides a complete measure of park safety.

Q2. What potential benefit of adjustable systems is mentioned?

  • (A) They make nighttime access unnecessary.
  • (B) They automatically eliminate all public safety risks.
  • (C) They may reduce wasteful lighting and direct light toward paths.
  • (D) They increase the number of parks available in every neighborhood.

Q3. Why might a park with many lamps still have visibility problems?

  • (A) Lamps may be poorly positioned and create strong shadows.
  • (B) The total electrical output of lamps is always too low.
  • (C) Every wooded area must remain completely dark.
  • (D) Residents are prohibited from using parks after dark.

Q4. Which difference between park locations does the passage emphasize?

  • (A) All parks have the same seasonal requirements.
  • (B) Protected wooded areas always need brighter lighting than paths.
  • (C) Commuter routes are never used during winter.
  • (D) A commuter path and a protected habitat may need different approaches.

Q5. What is one limitation of simply counting lamps?

  • (A) Counting them always overestimates energy use.
  • (B) It does not reveal whether lighting meets users’ and wildlife’s needs.
  • (C) It proves the absence of safety risks.
  • (D) It prevents any form of maintenance.

Q6. Why does the city propose consulting residents?

  • (A) To replace all technical measurements with opinions.
  • (B) To avoid examining environmental effects.
  • (C) To capture experiences that light measurements alone cannot describe.
  • (D) To ensure everyone supports the project before it begins.

Q7. Which statement would the author most likely reject?

  • (A) A single ideal level of brightness will work equally well in every park.
  • (B) Monitoring should inform future adjustments.
  • (C) Different park functions may require different designs.
  • (D) A trial can reveal unintended problems before expansion.

Q8. What is the intended role of the initial trial?

  • (A) To make permanent decisions without further review.
  • (B) To count lamps without consulting specialists.
  • (C) To demonstrate that wildlife is unaffected in every season.
  • (D) To gather evidence before a larger investment and allow revisions.

長文2|独自長文B|学校給食の食品ロス測定と栄養・満足度

英文:約260語。原文の主旨と段落の役割を把握しましょう。

School districts seeking to reduce food waste often begin by weighing leftovers from cafeterias. Such measurements can reveal which meals are regularly discarded and whether portion sizes appear appropriate. Some administrators hope that lower waste totals will reduce purchasing costs and lessen the environmental impact of food production. Yet a school can report less waste for reasons that do not indicate better meals. For instance, smaller portions may reduce what is left on plates while also leaving some students hungry.

Nutrition specialists warn that the amount of food thrown away is only one part of evaluating a lunch program. Students differ in age, appetite, dietary needs, and the length of time available to eat. A menu that looks efficient on average may not serve every group equally well. Moreover, when students skip lunch entirely, their behavior may not be captured by a method that examines only food returned on trays. Simply replacing unpopular items with those most frequently eaten could also reduce dietary variety.

Several districts are therefore combining waste measurements with other evidence. They interview students about the time they need to eat, ask kitchen staff about preparation difficulties, and review nutritional standards before changing menus. Some schools are testing options that let students choose between suitable portions while continuing to offer balanced meals. These experiments introduce additional administrative work and may require careful oversight. Nevertheless, supporters believe a more comprehensive approach is preferable to a policy judged solely by kilograms of discarded food. The point is to reduce unnecessary waste without making nutrition, affordability, or access secondary concerns.

Q9. What is the central concern of the passage?

  • (A) Waste measurements are legally prohibited.
  • (B) Students universally prefer smaller lunches.
  • (C) Food waste alone is an incomplete measure of a school lunch program.
  • (D) Schools should stop providing balanced meals.

Q10. Which situation could reduce reported waste without improving the program?

  • (A) Serving portions that are too small for some students.
  • (B) Providing enough time for lunch.
  • (C) Reviewing nutritional standards.
  • (D) Offering balanced portion choices.

Q11. Why could focusing only on trays fail to capture a problem?

  • (A) Every student throws away exactly the same food.
  • (B) Tray inspections always occur before food is served.
  • (C) Kitchen staff would be unable to prepare meals.
  • (D) Students who skip lunch may not return food on a tray.

Q12. What does the passage say about replacing unpopular menu items?

  • (A) It is mandatory in every district.
  • (B) It might reduce dietary variety if popularity is the only criterion.
  • (C) It guarantees affordability.
  • (D) It removes the need for nutritional oversight.

Q13. What additional factor does the proposed evaluation consider?

  • (A) Only the price paid by kitchen staff.
  • (B) The number of online comments alone.
  • (C) Student eating time and nutritional requirements.
  • (D) Only the total amount purchased.

Q14. What is a challenge of the more comprehensive approach?

  • (A) It may require additional administration and monitoring.
  • (B) It makes weighing leftovers impossible.
  • (C) It permanently prevents students from choosing portions.
  • (D) It eliminates all costs of food preparation.

Q15. Which claim goes beyond what the author supports?

  • (A) Food waste is worth measuring.
  • (B) Nutrition must remain important.
  • (C) Balanced meals should be considered.
  • (D) Reducing food waste guarantees that all students receive adequate nutrition.

Q16. What policy would be most consistent with the passage?

  • (A) Judging success solely by discarded kilograms.
  • (B) Combining waste data with nutrition and student experience before decisions.
  • (C) Stopping all cafeteria interviews.
  • (D) Choosing only the dishes that sell most quickly.

長文3|独自長文C|博物館展示品の来歴とデジタル複製

英文:約271語。原文の主旨と段落の役割を把握しましょう。

Museums increasingly use high-resolution digital models to let visitors examine objects that are too fragile or valuable to handle. Such models can make collections accessible to researchers living far from the original artifacts, and they may enable educators to show details that are difficult to see in a conventional display. However, an accurate digital representation does not resolve every question about an object’s history. A model may record its appearance while providing little information about how the object was acquired or how different communities understand its significance.

These questions have become especially important where an artifact was removed from its place of origin under contested circumstances. Some institutions argue that broad digital access allows more people to study a collection while discussions about ownership continue. Representatives of source communities may welcome access but also object if the institution presents the digital model as an adequate replacement for addressing ownership and cultural responsibilities. Others raise concerns about publishing detailed images of objects that have restrictions on public display in their original cultural context.

Several museums are adopting procedures that involve consultation before digitization or publication. Staff review historical records, identify uncertainties in a collection’s provenance, and discuss what information can responsibly be made public. In some cases, parties may agree to share research while continuing negotiations about the physical artifact. This approach can be slower than scanning every item first, and disagreement may persist. Nevertheless, supporters argue that careful documentation and consultation can make digital initiatives more trustworthy. Their argument is not that digital models are inherently harmful, but that technical access cannot substitute for resolving questions of rights, interpretation, and responsibility.

Q17. What is the main point of the passage?

  • (A) Digital models eliminate all ownership disputes.
  • (B) Museums should stop using digital technology.
  • (C) Only the physical appearance of an object matters.
  • (D) Digital access can be useful, but it cannot replace ethical and historical responsibilities.

Q18. Which benefit of digital models is explicitly identified?

  • (A) They can help distant researchers examine details.
  • (B) They prove all records about an object’s origin.
  • (C) They permanently protect an object from every risk.
  • (D) They make consultation unnecessary.

Q19. What does the passage suggest digital models may fail to show?

  • (A) The texture of every image.
  • (B) An object’s acquisition history or cultural meaning.
  • (C) Whether visitors live far away.
  • (D) The technical resolution of a scanner.

Q20. Why might some source communities object to digital publication?

  • (A) They reject all study of cultural materials under every circumstance.
  • (B) They believe every copy physically damages the artifact.
  • (C) The material may be subject to cultural restrictions on public display.
  • (D) The museums have stopped keeping historical records.

Q21. How does the passage characterize digital access during ownership discussions?

  • (A) It automatically settles ownership.
  • (B) It must always be suspended forever.
  • (C) It is irrelevant to researchers.
  • (D) It may be useful without removing the need to address disputed rights.

Q22. What can happen after institutions consult relevant communities?

  • (A) They may agree to share research while physical-object negotiations continue.
  • (B) All disagreements must disappear immediately.
  • (C) Historical uncertainties are automatically resolved.
  • (D) Digital images become legally owned by the museum.

Q23. Why is the consultation approach sometimes slower?

  • (A) Digital scanners cannot operate in museums.
  • (B) Reviewing records and discussing publication choices require time.
  • (C) Educators refuse to use high-resolution images.
  • (D) Consultation cannot occur before an exhibition.

Q24. Which conclusion would be least consistent with the author’s position?

  • (A) Technical access is only part of responsible museum practice.
  • (B) Uncertainty about provenance should be documented.
  • (C) Making a high-resolution copy automatically satisfies all ownership obligations.
  • (D) Consultation can improve the trustworthiness of digital projects.
