This, such, these, the former
  • 限定の強さ:may / can / some / under certain conditions を all / always / must に勝手に強めない。

Community groups in many regions help scientists observe rivers and streams. Volunteers collect water samples, measure temperature, and report unusual changes in the appearance of local waterways. Because professional teams cannot visit every location every week, such participation can reveal conditions that would otherwise remain undocumented. The resulting data can also encourage residents to pay closer attention to environmental issues. [空欄1] This becomes particularly important when measurements from several neighborhoods are brought together to support decisions about pollution or water management.

One group may collect samples immediately after heavy rainfall, while another measures the same river only on clear mornings. Their results might differ because of timing rather than a lasting change in water quality. Equipment also matters: a sensor that has not been calibrated may display readings that are consistent but systematically inaccurate. Volunteers may not recognize these differences if they have never received training in the limitations of their instruments. [空欄2] Policymakers could then devote resources to a problem that has been exaggerated or fail to recognize a genuine warning sign.

Supporters of citizen monitoring argue that the solution is not to exclude volunteers. Instead, trained researchers can offer common sampling procedures, explain how weather affects observations, and identify measurements that should be checked in a laboratory. Community groups, meanwhile, can advise scientists about locations that deserve attention and practical difficulties that a centralized survey might miss. [空欄3] This cooperative approach requires time and funding, but it can make environmental evidence more reliable while preserving the local knowledge and public participation that first made volunteer monitoring valuable.

  • (A) However, a larger number of observations does not automatically mean that the results can be compared reliably.
  • (B) For this reason, trained scientists have stopped measuring water conditions altogether.
  • (C) Consequently, every observation by a volunteer should be treated as more accurate than laboratory findings.
  • (D) In addition, river monitoring is useful only in locations where no residents live.

  • (A) Consequently, sampling schedules no longer matter once data have been entered into a computer.
  • (B) As a result, differences in measurement procedures may be mistaken for actual changes in the river.
  • (C) This proves that volunteers intentionally misreport the condition of local waterways.
  • (D) For this reason, laboratory researchers should never communicate with community groups.

  • (A) In other words, professional scientists should transfer every decision to volunteers.
  • (B) This division of labor eliminates the need for technical training and laboratory checks.
  • (C) The goal is to combine local reach with methods that make the resulting evidence dependable.
  • (D) Such cooperation makes the accuracy of measurements less important than public enthusiasm.

Transportation authorities increasingly use computerized systems to plan bus schedules. Algorithms can compare passenger counts across routes, estimate demand at different times of day, and suggest where additional vehicles would carry the greatest number of people. This approach can help managers make better use of limited budgets, especially when schedules have become complicated. [空欄4] A neighborhood with only two buses a day may show low passenger numbers not because few residents need public transportation, but because the service is too inconvenient for them to use regularly.

This creates a difficult feedback loop. If planners reduce services wherever current ridership is low, residents may stop relying on the remaining buses. Their absence then appears in later data as further evidence that the route is unnecessary. In a district with many older residents or households without private cars, the costs of this cycle can be substantial even when the affected population is relatively small. [空欄5] The challenge is to distinguish places where fewer services genuinely match people’s preferences from places where inadequate services have suppressed demand that might otherwise exist.

Some transit agencies are testing alternative evaluation methods. They compare passenger counts with information about access to hospitals, shopping areas, and other essential destinations. They also consult residents who rarely travel by bus and experiment with temporary service changes to see whether demand responds. These methods are not perfect; surveys may fail to represent all households, and short trials can miss seasonal patterns. Nevertheless, they provide additional evidence that historical passenger totals alone cannot supply. [空欄6] A fair transportation system, from this perspective, must measure not only how many people currently use a route but also who would be excluded if it disappeared.

  • (A) Indeed, historical passenger figures reveal exactly how many people would travel if services were more frequent.
  • (B) But past ridership can hide demand in areas where poor services have already discouraged travel.
  • (C) Therefore, bus operators should use only passenger totals and ignore other information.
  • (D) In fact, transportation budgets are unlimited whenever digital algorithms are used.

  • (A) This demonstrates that every low-use bus route should be permanently abolished.
  • (B) Nevertheless, such districts always receive more buses than they require.
  • (C) Thus, an apparently efficient plan may reproduce existing inequalities unless this feedback loop is considered.
  • (D) Furthermore, residents without cars never use public transportation.

  • (A) Instead, previous passenger figures should be deleted from every database.
  • (B) Consequently, temporary trials can predict all future travel patterns with certainty.
  • (C) This means that local surveys have no limitations worth considering.
  • (D) Such an approach treats historical data as one input rather than a complete measure of public need.

Q1:(A) However, a larger number of observations does not automatically mean that the results can be compared reliably.

Q2:(B) As a result, differences in measurement procedures may be mistaken for actual changes in the river.

Q3:(C) The goal is to combine local reach with methods that make the resulting evidence dependable.

Q4:(B) But past ridership can hide demand in areas where poor services have already discouraged travel.

Q5:(C) Thus, an apparently efficient plan may reproduce existing inequalities unless this feedback loop is considered.

Q6:(D) Such an approach treats historical data as one input rather than a complete measure of public need.

1:The monitoring network provides useful local information. However, its measurements may not be directly comparable.
2:Some buses carry few passengers because the services are infrequent.
3:A sensor can be consistent but inaccurate.
4:Low ridership can lead to fewer buses, which then discourages travel.
  • 練習5:Volunteers collect data; professional teams check technical accuracy.
6:Historical passenger numbers are useful but incomplete.
