in which を見たら機械的に「その中で」と訳すのではなく、participate in、unfamiliar with、base A on B のような元の結び付きを探します。

the extent to which は「どの程度か」、some of which は「どの集合のいくつかか」まで読む必要があります。

  • 先行詞を具体名詞で言う:which = proposal、whom = advisers のように戻す。
  • 節内の動きを戻す:object to the proposal、send specifications to the advisers の形にする。
  • 断定の範囲を保つ:may、would、some、none、uncertain まで残して訳す。

参照:Cambridge「Which」

The proposal to which they objected was revised. なら、They objected to the proposal. と The proposal was revised.

in which / for which / to whichparticipate in A / pay for A / object to A動詞がどの対象と結び付くか
with whichbe unfamiliar with A / compare B with A形容詞との結び付きか、比較対象か
under which / at whichunder the conditions / at that stageどの条件・段階に限定されるか
against whichassess A against a standard評価される対象と評価基準の区別
the extent to whichto what extent …?
some / none / both of whichsome / none / both of the designsどの集合について数量を述べるか
the scope of whichthe scope of the agreement「集合の一部」ではなく属性を表す場合
to some of whomsend A to some of the advisers行為者・送る物・受取人の区別

数量表現を伴う of which・of whom では、which・whom だけでなく some of which などのまとまり全体が節の主語になることがあります。the extent to which British Council/Cambridge「the extent to which」

The research network in which several small laboratories participate has revised its membership rules.

Several small laboratories participate in the research network.

The research network has revised its membership rules.

The research network / has revised。 participate in the research network

The equipment for which the college paid in advance arrived without the required cables.

The college paid for the equipment in advance.

The equipment arrived without the required cables.

pay for the equipment の for が前に出ている。

without the required cables

例3 to which:異議の対象

The proposal to which two members objected was adopted after the budget was reduced.

Two members objected to the proposal.

The proposal was adopted after the budget was reduced.

The proposal / was adopted。object to the proposal の to は前置詞であり、不定詞の to ではない。

例4 on which:批判の根拠

The evidence on which the editor based her criticism came from an unpublished report.

The editor based her criticism on the evidence.

The evidence came from an unpublished report.

構造: 主節は The evidence / came。関係詞節では the editor が主語、based が動詞、her criticism が目的語。base A on B の B が evidence。

例5 from which:数値の出所

The source from which the figures were taken did not explain how missing responses were treated.

The figures were taken from the source.

The source did not explain how missing responses were treated.

The source / did not explain。関係詞節は the figures / were taken。

The earlier estimate with which the analysts compared the final total excluded maintenance costs.

The analysts compared the final total with the earlier estimate.

The earlier estimate excluded maintenance costs.

The earlier estimate / excluded。compare A with B の A は the final total、B は the earlier estimate。

例7 under which:試験の条件

The conditions under which the adhesive was tested differed from those in the workshop.

The adhesive was tested under the conditions.

The conditions differed from the conditions in the workshop.

関係詞節は the adhesive / was tested。

The procedure with which the new staff were unfamiliar required two separate approvals.

The new staff were unfamiliar with the procedure.

The procedure required two separate approvals.

関係詞節は the new staff / were unfamiliar。

The stage at which applicants may amend their submissions is stated in the guide.

Applicants may amend their submissions at that stage.

That stage is stated in the guide.

構造: 主節は The stage / is stated。

The training session after which the volunteers felt more confident focused on difficult conversations.

The volunteers felt more confident after the training session.

The training session focused on difficult conversations.

構造: 主節は The training session / focused。 after the training session

The documentation without which the tables would be difficult to interpret is available online.

The tables would be difficult to interpret without the documentation.

The documentation is available online.

構造: 主節は The documentation / is available。

例12 against which:評価の基準

The standard against which the samples were assessed was stricter than the supplier's own.

The samples were assessed against the standard.

The standard was stricter than the supplier's own standard.

構造: 主節は The standard / was stricter。関係詞節は the samples / were assessed。assess A against B は B に照らして A を評価する関係。

例13 the extent to which:効果の程度は未確定

The extent to which the new timetable reduces delays remains uncertain.

To what extent does the new timetable reduce delays?

That extent remains uncertain.

構造: 主節の主語は The extent to which … 関係詞節内は the new timetable / reduces。reduce delays to a particular extent

例14 the degree to which:調査した対象

The survey examined the degree to which residents trusted messages from unfamiliar senders.

To what degree did residents trust messages from unfamiliar senders?

The survey examined that degree.

目的語は the degree to which …。

例15 the way in which:方法を一まとまりにする

The way in which the questions were ordered influenced the discussion.

The questions were ordered in a particular way.

That way influenced the discussion.

The way in which … / influenced。関係詞節は the questions / were ordered。in a particular way は並べ方を示す。

The method by which the team identified duplicate records is described in the appendix.

The team identified duplicate records by that method.

That method is described in the appendix.

構造: 主節は The method / is described。 by that method は識別の手段である。

The process through which complaints reach the review panel includes an initial screening.

Complaints reach the review panel through this process.

This process includes an initial screening.

through this process が経路・手順を示す。

The terms on which the archive grants access allow readers to quote brief passages.

The archive grants access on these terms.

These terms allow readers to quote brief passages.

on these terms は「これらの条件で」。

例19 some of which:指定された集合のいくつか

The committee considered six designs, some of which required additional testing.

The committee considered six designs.

Some of the six designs required additional testing.

関係詞節の主語は some of which 全体、動詞は required。

The inspectors listed three defects, none of which affected the emergency exit.

The inspectors listed three defects.

None of the three defects affected the emergency exit.

None of the three defects / affected

例21 both of which:二つの各々について成立

The team compared two plans, both of which included a public briefing.

The team compared two plans.

Both of the two plans included a public briefing.

関係詞節の主語は both of which、述語は included。

Researchers interviewed fifteen trainees, many of whom had previously worked in another field.

Researchers interviewed fifteen trainees.

Many of the fifteen trainees had previously worked in another field.

関係詞節は many of whom / had worked。

例23 the scope of which:一部ではなく属性

The agreement, the scope of which was disputed, remained in force.

The scope of the agreement was disputed.

The agreement remained in force.

挿入された関係詞節の主語は the scope of which、述語は was disputed。

例24 to some of whom:一部の人に送る

The coordinator contacted eight advisers, to some of whom she later sent revised specifications.

The coordinator contacted eight advisers.

She later sent revised specifications to some of the eight advisers.

sent の目的語は revised specifications、to some of whom は送り先。

A university team developed a program for comparing vocabulary in collections of printed essays. The essays on which the original tests were based had been checked by human editors, and their publication dates were known. When the team released the program, several researchers welcomed the opportunity to examine its calculations. A downloadable package, however, contained only the code and a short demonstration. It did not include the rules under which punctuation had been removed or the list of unusual spellings that had been treated as equivalent.

Two independent groups attempted to reproduce a published comparison. One obtained a similar ranking of the collections; the other did not. The difference was initially attributed to the computer systems on which the program was run. Further investigation identified a different source: the groups had prepared the texts in different ways. The second group had retained headings that the original team had excluded. Because certain words occurred frequently in those headings, their inclusion altered the results without revealing a fault in the calculations themselves.

In response, the developers added the missing preparation instructions and a small set of sample texts. These changes made the original comparison easier to reproduce. They did not establish the extent to which the program could produce meaningful comparisons between essays and informal messages. Such messages contained abbreviations and incomplete sentences for which the existing preparation rules had not been designed. One researcher proposed modifying the rules, but the developers asked for a separate evaluation before presenting the modified version as suitable for that purpose.

The university then revised the way in which it presented the software. The release page distinguished between access to the code, reproduction of the original analysis, and evidence supporting a new use. It also listed several proposed extensions, some of which were still awaiting tests. This did not prevent researchers from trying them. Rather, it allowed readers to see which claims had been examined and which remained proposals. The project leader argued that openness was valuable partly because it made disagreements easier to investigate. A public download, in this view, was the beginning of an exchange through which a method could be assessed, not a certificate covering every application that a future user might imagine.

問25 What information about the original analysis was missing from the initial downloadable package?

  • A. Permission to examine the code on a computer system different from the developers' own.
  • B. Results from informal messages that could be used in place of the original essay collections.
  • C. Decisions about text preparation that affected how the analysis was performed.
  • D. The computational procedure, although the rules for handling unusual spellings were supplied.

問26 Why did the second group obtain a different result?

  • A. Its retention of headings changed word frequencies relevant to the comparison.
  • B. Its removal of headings left too little material for the program to rank the collections.
  • C. Its inclusion of unusual spellings exposed an error in the calculations.
  • D. Its use of publication dates caused the program to apply rules intended for messages.

問27 What was the developers' position on the proposed modification?

  • A. Reproducing the essay comparison was sufficient evidence for recommending the program for informal messages.
  • B. Changing the preparation rules would make the program unsuitable for its original purpose.
  • C. The original rules were already designed around the abbreviations found in informal messages.
  • D. The adaptation needed separate assessment before it was presented as suitable for informal messages.

問28 What did the revised release page enable readers to understand?

  • A. Which research groups had received approval to develop each proposed extension.
  • B. Which claims had been tested and which possible uses still required evaluation.
  • C. Why public access had been restricted to extensions that reproduced the first comparison.
  • D. How making the code available had resolved disagreements about its future applications.

解答:問25 C/問26 A/問27 D/問28 B

It did not include the rules under which punctuation had been removed or the list of unusual spellings that had been treated as equivalent.

The second group had retained headings that the original team had excluded. Because certain words occurred frequently in those headings, their inclusion altered the results …

本文根拠: 第3段落:the developers asked for a separate evaluation before presenting the modified version as suitable for that purpose.

These changes … They did not establish …

for which … had not been designed と逆。

第3段落末の asked for a separate evaluation before presenting …

本文根拠: 第4段落:it allowed readers to see which claims had been examined and which remained proposals.

読み方: some of which の集合は proposed extensions。

A private foundation funded short residential courses for emerging translators. Applicants submitted a sample translation and a statement explaining the training from which they hoped to benefit. Reviewers praised the clarity of some statements but noticed that experienced applicants often used terminology with which newer candidates were unfamiliar. The foundation wanted to know whether its application process was identifying people likely to benefit from training or people already familiar with the language of funding applications. It therefore introduced a small trial in which selected applicants could explain their plans in an interview.

Participation was voluntary, and interviewees continued to submit the same written materials. Interviewers received a common set of questions, some of which asked candidates to describe a problem encountered in a translation. They were instructed to request an example when an answer was vague, but not to suggest a solution. The aim was to make candidates' reasoning more visible without supplying the reasoning that reviewers were expected to assess. A record of each interview accompanied the written application, allowing a second reviewer to examine the basis on which the first had reached a recommendation.

The trial produced several cases in which an initially unconvincing statement was followed by a thoughtful explanation. These cases encouraged the organizers, but they did not show the extent to which interviews improved the selection process overall. Candidates who chose an interview might have differed from those who declined one. Moreover, the interviewers had received more preparation time than staff could expect during a full application round. A format that worked under those conditions might become less consistent if interviews were shortened or assigned to less prepared staff.

The foundation decided to retain interviews for another trial rather than make them compulsory immediately. It planned to compare applications assessed with and without an interview record and to monitor the time required. It also clarified the standards against which recommendations should be made: reviewers were to consider the sample's strengths, the applicant's account of a learning need, and the relevance of the proposed course. A polished statement could still provide useful evidence, but it was not intended to compensate for a weak connection between the course and the applicant's goals. The revised process sought a better basis for judgment while keeping its own practical limits open to examination.

問29 What concern motivated the foundation to introduce interviews?

  • A. Written statements placed too much weight on the length of applicants' previous employment.
  • B. Applicants were choosing courses mainly because funding covered residential accommodation.
  • C. Reviewers had become less able to evaluate the quality of translation samples.
  • D. Familiarity with application language might be influencing judgments about who would benefit from training.

問30 How were interviewers expected to respond to a vague answer?

  • A. Help the candidate solve the translation problem before recording an explanation of the solution.
  • B. Ask for a concrete example while avoiding suggestions about how to solve the problem.
  • C. Replace the written statement with a discussion focused on knowledge of specialist terminology.
  • D. Provide increasingly detailed hints when the translation sample had received a low score.

問31 Why did the organizers avoid treating the encouraging cases as proof of overall improvement?

  • A. Voluntary participation and unusually generous preparation time limited what the trial could demonstrate.
  • B. Interview records showed that trained interviewers rarely agreed on an assessment standard.
  • C. The promising interviews came mainly from candidates whose written translations were already the highest rated.
  • D. A second review demonstrated that shorter interviews produced more consistent recommendations.

問32 Which approach was consistent with the clarified standards?

  • A. Treating a polished statement as sufficient justification when the course had little connection to the applicant's goals.
  • B. Using sample quality to determine awards and considering learning needs only when samples were similarly rated.
  • C. Considering the translation sample, the stated learning need, and how well the proposed course matched the applicant.
  • D. Using the amount of interview time a candidate required as an indicator of eligibility for funding.

解答:問29 D/問30 B/問31 A/問32 C

本文根拠: 第1段落:whether its application process was identifying people likely to benefit from training or people already familiar with the language of funding applications.

第1段落の whether … or …

読み方: with which … were unfamiliar を unfamiliar with the terminology と戻し、経験の浅い志願者が何に不慣れなのかを限定する。

They were instructed to request an example when an answer was vague, but not to suggest a solution.

第2段落の request an example … but not to suggest a solution に一致する。

読み方: some of which は質問の一部を受ける。

Candidates who chose an interview might have differed … the interviewers had received more preparation time than staff could expect during a full application round.

読み方: the extent to which … overall と under those conditions に注目する。

本文根拠: 第4段落:reviewers were to consider the sample's strengths, the applicant's account of a learning need, and the relevance of the proposed course.

第4段落の sample's strengths、account of a learning need、relevance of the proposed course を保った言い換え。

the training from which they hoped to benefit: They hoped to benefit from the training. benefit from

terminology with which newer candidates were unfamiliar: Newer candidates were unfamiliar with the terminology. unfamiliar with の関係。

the basis on which the first had reached a recommendation: The first reviewer had reached a recommendation on that basis. first

the standards against which recommendations should be made: Recommendations should be made against these standards. against

in whichはすべてwhereに置き換えられますか?

場所を表す in which なら where と対応する場合がありますが、participate in a network の in や、in a particular way の in を、場所の語だからという理由で一律に where に換えることはできません。

the proposal to which they objected に対して、限定用法で the proposal that they objected to という語順は可能です。

the extent to whichは「理由」と訳せますか?

The extent … remains uncertain. The study examined the extent …

some of which なら「その集合のいくつか」、the scope of which なら「その対象の範囲」です。
