| with the qualification that … | …
|---|---|---|
| have reservations about … | … |
| have no reservations / without reservation | 対象について留保がない/留保なく | 別の対象への評価や、専門資格の有無。 |
| reserve judgment on … | …

A|A catalogue that still needs testing|検証を続ける蔵書検索システム
A municipal library proposed replacing its catalogue interface with a system that grouped books by broad themes. A review panel offered qualified support: it endorsed an optional trial, provided that readers could still use the existing catalogue and that requests for staff assistance were recorded. The library director welcomed the endorsement but initially described it to a local newsletter as approval of the replacement. Panel members objected that their recommendation concerned a reversible experiment, whereas the director’s description implied that the principal decision had already been made.
The disagreement was not simply about cautious wording. In the preliminary comparison, regular borrowers who had received a short demonstration found several specified titles more quickly with the new interface. New visitors, however, were not included. When asked whether the results showed that the system was easier to use, the analyst qualified that claim: the observed advantage applied to trained regular borrowers performing the tasks included in the comparison. It did not establish how an unfamiliar visitor searching by subject would fare. She retained the finding while narrowing the inference drawn from it.
A professionally qualified usability reviewer also supported the trial, but reserved judgment on permanent adoption. Her credentials described her competence to assess interfaces; they did not convert her provisional recommendation into an unrestricted endorsement. Meanwhile, a readers’ association expressed reservations about keeping identifiable search histories. It accepted that the trial might reveal useful information and proposed recording requests for assistance without linking them to named borrowers. Its concern about data collection was therefore distinguishable from a verdict on the interface’s usefulness. Treating the association as simply opposed to experimentation would obscure the change it was seeking.
The revised newsletter separated these positions. It reported the panel’s conditional approval, the analyst’s restriction on the preliminary finding, and the association’s concern about the records. The director agreed to recruit readers unfamiliar with the catalogue and to ask them to carry out subject searches without the earlier demonstration. These additional observations would address a gap in the existing comparison, although they would not by themselves settle every question about implementation. The panel would review the results before deciding whether to recommend replacement. Its present support authorised learning more; it did not announce what that later judgment would be.
問17
What did the panel’s initial endorsement authorise?
- A. Replacing the existing catalogue once staff had been trained to answer questions.
- B. Treating the preliminary comparison as sufficient evidence for permanent adoption.
- C. Conducting an optional trial while preserving the existing option and recording assistance requests.
- D. Allowing the director to choose between the two catalogues after consulting regular borrowers.
問18
What was the effect of the analyst’s qualification of the claim?
- A. The reported advantage was retained, but its application was confined to the tested users and tasks.
- B. The advantage was attributed to the demonstration rather than to the interface.
- C. The comparison was revised to include visitors who had never used the catalogue.
- D. The original finding was set aside until the association accepted the data policy.
問19
Why would describing the readers’ association as opposed to experimentation be misleading?
- A. It had already endorsed permanent adoption after the director promised a new study.
- B. It accepted the possible value of a trial while seeking a change in how records were kept.
- C. It questioned the reviewer’s professional credentials rather than the proposed records.
- D. It preferred to keep named search histories until the interface’s usefulness had been established.
問20
Which conclusion best captures the passage’s central distinction?
- A. A professional reviewer’s endorsement should take priority over an association’s concerns.
- B. Evidence from regular borrowers becomes adequate for replacement if a trial remains optional.
- C. Conditional recommendations are chiefly devices for delaying decisions that experts already favour.
- D. Support for further testing can coexist with limits on evidence and an undecided final policy.

問18:正解 A
対象は trained regular borrowers と the tasks included。
B|Eligibility is not an endorsement|応募資格と作品への支持

An independent translation prize introduced a category for a translator’s first published book. Applicants had to provide publication records and permission from the relevant rights holder. Once these requirements were satisfied, a book qualified for consideration; the phrase did not indicate that the judges had rated it highly. An administrator nevertheless used the announcement of eligibility to promote Lina’s translation as a work already endorsed by the panel. The chair requested a correction, explaining that admission to the competition and a judgment about literary merit were separate stages.
The judges’ comments were more nuanced than the announcement suggested. Rosa initially criticised passages in Lina’s version as excessively repetitive. After comparing them with the original, she qualified her criticism: some repetition reproduced a deliberate feature of the narrator’s voice rather than reflecting careless editing. She still found several jokes awkward and wanted them reconsidered. Her revised assessment therefore recognised a reason for retaining certain passages without turning her earlier criticism into a general endorsement of the translation as it stood. The distinction mattered because the administrator had treated any reduction in criticism as equivalent to approval.
Dario, a qualified translator with experience in the book’s specialist subject, had no reservations about the accuracy of its technical passages. He reserved judgment on its overall literary quality, however, until he had discussed the dialogue with another reader. His professional qualifications and his confidence in one aspect of the translation did not settle that broader question. A third judge, Mina, offered qualified support for using the book in an educational series, provided that a glossary was added. Her suggestion addressed a particular use and did not state how she would rank it against the other prize entries.
At the next meeting, the chair asked the administrator to preserve the object and limits of each judgment. Rosa’s qualification concerned the grounds of a criticism, Dario’s reservation of judgment concerned literary quality, and Mina’s support depended on an editorial addition. Combining these remarks into an unqualified recommendation would erase differences that remained relevant to the decision. The panel agreed to discuss the further reading and proposed revisions before announcing an award. Eligibility allowed Lina’s work to enter that discussion; it did not prejudge its outcome. The corrected notice accordingly reported that the translation had been admitted for consideration and that evaluation was continuing.

まず主節の判断を押さえ、次に but・although・not without・with the qualification that などが何を修正しているか確認します。
