|---|---|---|
| maintain+物・状態 | They maintain the equipment.=彼らは機器を保守する。 |
| maintain+that節 | They maintain that the equipment works.=彼らは機器が機能すると主張している。 |
| sustain+活動 | The funding sustained the programme.=その資金が活動の継続を支えた。 |
| sustain+damage・losses | The equipment sustained damage.=機器が損傷を受けた。 |
| sustain+claim・argument | The evidence does not sustain the claim.=その証拠では主張を支えられない。
| maintain | 状態・水準を保つ/良好な状態を維持管理する | maintain quality/equipment/a temperature | maintain that …
- 文型と発言者を見る:The director maintains that … The technicians maintain the equipment.

For nearly three decades, the Merewick Theatre had occupied a former assembly hall owned by a local charitable trust. A large donation eventually paid for a new roof and restored the auditorium. Newspaper reports celebrated the building's rescue, but the incoming manager was less certain about the organisation's future. The renovation had preserved an important landmark. It had not created the recurring income needed to sustain a programme of performances, rehearsals, and classes. Keeping the doors physically intact was different from keeping them meaningfully open.
The manager first examined expenditure that rarely appeared in publicity material. Lighting equipment needed to be maintained, insurance renewed, and technicians paid even when a production sold poorly. Volunteers could reduce some expenses, but their time was not an inexhaustible resource. Experienced helpers were leaving because rehearsal changes arrived at short notice. The manager proposed a predictable calendar and mentoring for new recruits. Retaining knowledge, she argued, depended partly on making participation compatible with people's other responsibilities.
Energy costs presented a further choice. One trustee suggested closing the hall on weekday evenings to conserve fuel. The proposal would reduce heating hours, but those were precisely the periods when many working residents could rehearse. Instead, staff investigated whether occupied rooms could be heated without warming unused spaces. The comparison therefore concerned both expenditure and access. A cheaper building that could no longer support local participation would not necessarily fulfil the trust's purpose.
The theatre's artistic director maintained that an annual gala could cover the remaining shortfall. The treasurer did not dismiss the idea, but she questioned the assumptions behind it. Receipts from the previous gala included a donation earmarked for restoration, and ticket income varied with the performers available. That event demonstrated an ability to attract support on one occasion; it did not establish a dependable annual surplus. The board requested a budget separating restricted donations, ordinary income, and recurring costs before approving the next season.
Eventually, the trustees agreed to rent part of the hall to a partner organisation on selected mornings. They retained ownership and reserved rehearsal periods, while accepting that some activities would need to move. Success would be judged by reliable staffing, manageable expenditure, and continued access for local groups, rather than the restoration alone. Preserving the theatre as a living institution required adjustments to its operation, not merely the retention of its original timetable. The manager saw continuity as something that had to be organised and financed, rather than a quality automatically conferred by an impressive building.
問17
Why did the incoming manager remain uncertain after the renovation?
- A. The trust had transferred the building to an organisation with different objectives.
- B. The renovation had prevented local groups from entering the auditorium.
- C. Restoring the building had not resolved the programme’s need for continuing resources.
- D. The newspaper reports showed that the restoration had exceeded its approved budget.
問18
What concern complicated the proposal to close the hall on weekday evenings?
- A. Saving fuel at those times could restrict participation by working residents.
- B. Closing the hall would increase the cost of mentoring new volunteers.
- C. The proposal depended on finding a partner to rent rooms during those evenings.
- D. The proposal assumed that a predictable calendar had already resolved staffing difficulties.
問19
How should the director’s statement about the annual gala be interpreted?
- A. It confirms that restricted donations may be used for any recurring expense.
- B. It reports a dependable surplus established over several seasons.
- C. It means the treasurer rejected the event as incapable of attracting support.
- D. It presents a claim whose underlying financial assumptions still require examination.
問20
Which statement best captures the final approach?
- A. Preserving the trust’s purpose requires keeping its original timetable as the main measure of success.
- B. Operational changes may support continuity if resources and meaningful access are protected.
- C. Retaining ownership makes it unnecessary to assess the effects of renting out space.
- D. The restored auditorium provides sufficient evidence that the programme can support itself.

A research consortium inherited a mountain weather station with an unusually long sequence of observations. When a storm damaged the antenna, a report stated that the station had sustained damage despite regular maintenance. Some administrators interpreted this as evidence that routine inspections were pointless. The technicians disagreed. Maintenance could keep equipment in good working condition without guaranteeing that it would withstand every external event. The immediate problem was to restore communication while avoiding a gap in the underlying measurements.
The team proposed conserving battery power by changing how data were transmitted. Sensors would continue measuring at the established intervals, but the radio would send a daily summary instead of frequent detailed updates. Full measurements would be retained locally for collection during scheduled visits. This arrangement reduced transmission demands in the proposed design; it did not reduce the number of observations. Its usefulness nevertheless depended on technicians being able to retrieve the local records before the storage devices filled up or failed.
A review of older material revealed why retaining files was not the same as preserving a usable research record. Some files still existed, but the documents explaining their units and calibration settings could not be found. Without that information, a later researcher might mistake a change in the instrument for a change in the weather. The consortium decided to keep the original files alongside clear descriptions of their formats and the conditions under which measurements had been made. Where information was missing, the uncertainty would be recorded rather than concealed by a plausible reconstruction.
Funding created another difficulty. A donor offered to buy new equipment but was reluctant to support routine visits or staff training. The station manager maintained that purchasing devices alone would not sustain the observation programme. Experienced employees knew how to recognise unusual readings and distinguish equipment faults from genuine variation. To retain those employees while reducing dependence on a few individuals, the consortium proposed stable assignments and shared training. Hardware and knowledge both needed continuing support, although their costs appeared under different headings.
Before adopting the new transmission schedule for winter, the team would test it during a period when the station remained accessible. They would compare the stored measurements with the transmitted summaries, monitor battery use, and practise recovering the full records. The objective was not simply to keep a large quantity of data. It was to maintain a consistent series that future researchers could interpret. The final plan therefore treated conserving power, retaining information, and preserving its usefulness as related tasks that still required different checks.
問21
What does the report’s statement that the station had sustained damage mean?
- A. The technicians had preserved evidence of earlier damage in their maintenance records.
- B. The damage established that the antenna had already been unusable before the storm.
- C. The antenna had continued functioning throughout the storm without a communication problem.
- D. The station had suffered harm despite having undergone regular maintenance.
問22
Why did the consortium distinguish retaining files from preserving a usable record?
- A. Older files had been transferred to an institution that refused access.
- B. Possessing files did not ensure that their measurements could be interpreted correctly.
- C. The number of stored files exceeded the number of observations collected.
- D. Descriptions of the instruments could replace the need to keep original measurements.
問23
What would change under the proposed power conservation arrangement?
- A. Detailed observations would still be recorded locally, while routine radio transmissions would carry summaries.
- B. The sensors would collect fewer observations, while the radio would maintain its previous schedule.
- C. Only the summaries would be kept, making visits to collect data unnecessary.
- D. The devices would increase their storage capacity instead of altering transmission demands.
問24
What principle underlies the final plan?
- A. Once new equipment is purchased, the continuity of the observations can be assessed mainly by hardware ownership.
- B. A successful trial would make future retrieval and interpretation checks unnecessary.
- C. Long-term usefulness depends on coordinated support for power, records, interpretation, and staff capability.
- D. The programme should favour the largest quantity of files even if their conditions of measurement are uncertain.

The theatre preserved its building. The theatre needed recurring resources to sustain its programme even after its building had been restored.
The consortium retained files but lacked information needed to interpret some of them.
|---|---|---|
| The director maintained that … → The review proved that … |
| The station retained the files. → The files remained fully interpretable. | |
| The theatre conserved fuel. → The theatre fulfilled its purpose. | |
| The survey could not sustain the claim. → The claim was disproved. |
公的施設についてなら、preserve the building、maintain the equipment、retain skilled staff、conserve resources、sustain the serviceのように、何を守るのかを書き分けると論点が整理できます。
