originally、however、rather than、not necessarily、unlessなどで最初の理解が修正されるのに、そのまま判断してしまう。

Part

  • Part3 Real-Life:Situation
not necessarilyやI would preferの立場の強さを残す。

Woman: The museum called about our tour. The special exhibition still opens on Tuesday, but the guided session has been moved to Thursday because the curator is unavailable. Man: That’s unfortunate. Could we visit independently on Tuesday instead? Woman: We could, but the research archive is only accessible during a guided session, and that’s why we booked. Man: I have a meeting on Thursday afternoon. Woman: The new session starts at ten in the morning, so we would be finished before lunch. Man: In that case, let’s keep the booking. I was going to request a refund, but we would miss the archive. Woman: I’ll confirm the new time tonight.

Student: I saw that the university is holding an online scholarship workshop. Do applicants have to attend? Advisor: Not everyone. The workshop is optional at the application stage, although students invited to the final interview are strongly encouraged to join a later preparation session. Student: So the workshop next week isn’t the interview preparation? Advisor: Correct. Next week’s event explains the eligibility rules and how to submit supporting documents. Student: I thought the deadline was Friday. Advisor: That’s the deadline for the scholarship form. Recommendation letters may arrive the following Monday, provided the form itself is submitted on time. Student: That makes sense. I’ll apply on Thursday and attend the workshop if my schedule allows.

Urban planners have long promoted street trees as a way to improve the experience of walking in hot weather. In several neighborhoods, temperatures recorded near shaded sidewalks were lower than those measured in nearby open spaces. This observation encouraged local councils to expand planting projects. Yet researchers warned that the results did not prove trees were the only cause of the differences. Building heights, street orientation and weather conditions also affected the amount of shade available. Moreover, young trees can take years to provide extensive cover, and their survival may depend on adequate maintenance and access to water. A new evaluation project therefore plans to compare similar streets over several seasons. The researchers will also ask residents whether walking routes have become more usable during periods of high heat. Their aim is to measure both physical conditions and practical access rather than assuming that the number of trees planted is itself proof of success.

A national archive has begun converting historic letters and photographs into digital files. Supporters argue that this will allow students and researchers in distant regions to examine materials without visiting the archive in person. The project also creates backup copies in case physical documents deteriorate. However, digitization is not simply a matter of scanning pages. Some collections contain information about people whose families are still alive, and certain objects are subject to restrictions on reproduction. High-quality descriptions and searchable metadata are also expensive to prepare. In response, the archive plans to make public-domain collections freely accessible while reviewing sensitive materials individually. It will also provide explanatory notes about the origins and reliability of documents. Officials say the project’s success should be measured by whether users can find and understand trustworthy information, not only by how many images are uploaded. The archive will seek feedback from teachers, researchers and community representatives before expanding the system.

Situation:You need a step-free route to the Science Center by 11:00 a.m. You can leave Central Station at 9:10 and cannot use stairs.

Attention passengers traveling to the Science Center. The usual express service from Central Station will not stop at Museum Junction this morning because of track maintenance. Passengers may take the local service departing at 9:20 and change to the Green Line at River Station. However, the elevator at River Station is out of order until noon. Travelers needing step-free access should remain on the local service until Garden Terminal, where a wheelchair-accessible shuttle leaves at 9:45 and reaches the Science Center at 10:30. A second shuttle departs at 10:30, but it will not reach the center until after 11. Tickets for both services are accepted without an additional charge.

Situation:You have already registered for the data-literacy workshop and need an attendance certificate. You cannot attend the full opening morning, but you can join online after lunch.

Welcome to the data-literacy workshop. Registered participants may attend the morning lectures in person or watch recordings later. The afternoon practice session starts online at 1:30. To receive an attendance certificate, participants must complete the afternoon exercise and upload their answers by Friday at 5 p.m. Attendance at the morning lectures is recommended but not required for the certificate. If you cannot access the exercise platform, contact the support desk before Thursday evening. The desk can arrange an alternative submission method, but requests made after that time may not be processed before the deadline. Certificates will be issued the following Wednesday to participants who satisfy the requirements.

Interviewer: Many coastal communities are worried about declining fish stocks. Would stricter fishing limits solve the problem? Researcher: Limits may be necessary, but I would be cautious about presenting them as a complete solution. Fish populations also depend on habitat conditions and environmental changes. Interviewer: Some fishing groups argue that restrictions threaten their income. Researcher: That’s a serious concern. Rules designed without local input can create unnecessary hardship or encourage people to ignore them. However, delaying all action may also place long-term livelihoods at risk. Interviewer: So what approach would you favor? Researcher: Clear catch limits based on available evidence, combined with monitoring and support during a transition. We should update the rules if reliable new information becomes available. Interviewer: Are there examples proving this always works? Researcher: Not in every setting. Outcomes vary, and managers need to evaluate how both ecosystems and local communities respond. I would rather describe the strategy as adaptive than as guaranteed.

Interviewer: Online medical appointments have become more common. Are they as effective as in-person care? Physician: That is difficult to answer without specifying the condition. Remote consultations may save travel time and improve follow-up for some patients. However, a physical examination or urgent treatment cannot always be replaced by a video call. Interviewer: Does better internet access remove all the barriers? Physician: No. People may still struggle with devices, language or privacy at home. Some patients also need help interpreting instructions. Interviewer: Should governments subsidize remote services? Physician: Support can be reasonable when there is evidence of improved access, particularly for people living far from clinics. Yet funding should not be based only on the number of video calls completed. We also need to consider continuity of care, patient understanding and whether referrals happen promptly. Interviewer: What would you prioritize in the next stage? Physician: A system that lets patients move smoothly between online and in-person services, with clear standards for when each is appropriate.
