agree with・agree to・agree onの違い｜同意・賛成の無料40問【全解説】

「賛成する」を英語にするだけならagreeで十分ですが、実際の学校英作文や英検の長文では前置詞によって何に同意しているかが変わります。agree withは人や意見との一致、agree toは提案・条件の受諾、agree onは話し合って事項について合意することが中心です。さらにagree to doは「〜することに同意する」という行動の約束、agree that …は内容への同意です。慶英会の独自40問を用いて、同じ「賛成する」の日本語訳に頼らず、意味・語順・文型を使い分けられるようにします。

agree with：誰の考えと一致するか

I agree with you.は、相手の意見と一致することです。I agree with your opinion.とも言えます。withの後ろには人物のほか、意見や考えを示す名詞句も置けます。人物に同意するときagree to youとは通常言わず、agree with youを選びます。

agree to：条件を受け入れるのか、行動を引き受けるのか

They agreed to the conditions.は名詞conditionsを受け入れる意味です。They agreed to follow the conditions.なら、toの後ろに動詞followが来て「条件に従うことに同意した」となります。to＋名詞とto＋動詞の原形を区別すれば、文法の選択問題だけでなく英作文にも対応しやすくなります。

agree on：互いの意見をまとめて結論を決める

We agreed on the date for the event.は、イベントの日付について合意に達したという意味です。話し合いの結果として共通の結論に至ることが中心なので、決定された日付・価格・名称・規則・計画などと結び付きます。ただしagree about a topicも話題について意見が一致する場合に使えるため、onだけが唯一の英語というわけではありません。

混同しやすい「I agree that …」と「I agree to …」

I agree that the schedule is too busy.は「予定が忙しすぎるという判断に同意」です。I agreed to change the schedule.なら「予定を変更することを引き受けた」です。that以下に主語と動詞を含む文が来るのか、to以下に行動を置くのかで、答えるべき意味が変わります。

英検とNEW TREASUREで間違えやすい5つの文型

これから行う行動を引き受けるときはagree to＋動詞の原形。前置詞to＋名詞と区別します。

よくある質問

agree withとagree toはいつも区別できますか？

中心となる意味には違いがありますが、proposalやplanなどについて両方使える文脈があります。人物に同意する場合、条件・契約を受諾する場合、合意事項を決める場合を明示した文から理解しましょう。

agree to helpingは正しいですか？

「手伝うことに同意する」という基本構文はagree to helpです。agree to＋名詞句のtoを別の構文と混同しないようにします。

agree onとagree aboutの違いは？

agree onは協議を経て結論・事項で一致する意味でよく使われ、agree aboutはある話題について意見が一致する意味で使われます。多くの場面では両方自然で、無理に一方を誤りとしないことが大切です。

that節を直接置く形なら不要です。I agree that the plan is sensible.のように書きます。
