join・attend・participate in・take part in・join inの違い

日本語の「参加する」を直訳せず「役割」で選ぶ
I attended the speech contest.は大会に出席したという意味で、観客として行った場合にも自然です。I took part in the speech contest.は大会の参加者として活動したことが明確です。一方I joined the speech club.はスピーチクラブの一員になったという意味です。大会への参加と部活動への所属を同じ動詞にしないのがポイントです。
joinの後ろはto？ in？ それとも前置詞なし？
join a club、join a teamは前置詞を付けない形が基本です。join in the discussionやjoin in the gameは、その活動に加わる句動詞です。ただしjoin the gameも自然な英文であり、joinとjoin inが常に完全な二択になるわけではありません。学校英語の選択問題では、後続の名詞と伝えたい意味を確認しましょう。
attendとattend toは意味が変わる
attend a meeting／attend schoolは出席・通学を意味します。attend to a problem／attend to a customerは問題に対処する・客に応対するなど、別の意味になります。「会議に出席する」つもりでattend to the meetingと書くと意図がずれることがあります。
participate inとtake part inの違いは？
どちらも活動への参加を表せます。participate inは公式文書・学術的文章でもよく使われ、take part inは日常的な文章でも自然です。特定の活動ではどちらも正しいことがあるため、無理に日本語訳を使い分けるより、参加内容と前置詞inを正確に書くことが実用的です。
慶英会独自40問｜クラブ・授業・スピーチ大会の英語
問1〜25は括弧内から場面と語順に合う表現を選び、問26〜35は英文の誤りを修正し、問36〜40は日本語を英語にします。1問1点の40点満点。複数の自然な表現がある場合は解説で扱います。
第1部｜join：クラブ・団体に加わる（問1〜5）
join the club、join the teamのように、組織の一員になる意味では前置詞toやinを通常付けません。

attend＋the meeting/class/lecture/schoolが基本。出席自体は必ずしも積極的な活動参加を意味しません。

participateは基本的に自動詞で、活動を目的語として述べる場合はparticipate in＋活動です。

take part in＋活動。参加者として関与した行動を自然に表せます。

第5部｜join in：進行中の活動に加わる／前置詞（問21〜25）
join in the discussion / join in the gameなど、活動に加わる場合の句動詞と誤った前置詞を区別します。

よくある質問
join to the clubは正しいですか？
通常はjoin the clubです。クラブに入部し、メンバーになる意味ならtoを付けません。
attend the eventとparticipate in the eventはどちらも正しいですか？
どちらも文法的に正しい場合があります。attendは出席、participate inはそのイベントの活動に関わることをより明確にします。
take part inとparticipate inは言い換えられますか？
多くの活動参加の場面で言い換えられます。ニュアンスと文体に差がある場合もありますが、まずは両方ともinを使う点を確実にしてください。
join inとjoin the gameのどちらが正しいですか？
両方が自然な文脈があります。join in the gameは活動への参加を、join the gameもゲームへ加わることを表せます。どちらか一方を必ず誤りとするのは適切ではありません。
