ifとwhetherの違い｜「〜かどうか」「もし〜なら」無料40問・全解説

英語のifとwhetherは、どちらも「〜かどうか」と訳せる一方、ifには「もし〜なら」という条件の意味もあり、whetherには前置詞の後・to不定詞の前など、ifでは置き換えられない用法があります。学校英語やNEW TREASUREの定期テストで「if to go」「about if」と書いてしまうと、意味が通じそうでも文法的に不適切な英文になります。慶英会では「どちらも正しい場面」と「whetherが必要な場面」を意図的に分け、独自40問・全解答・14日復習を公開します。

特に重要なのは、I wonder if she is ready. とI wonder whether she is ready. はどちらも自然だという事実です。すべての問題で無理に二択の一方だけを正解にすると、学習者に誤った文法知識が残ります。したがって本教材は、選択25問のうち最初の5問を「両方正しい」とし、続く問題で構文上の違いを確認します。誤文訂正では、修正不要の問題も入れています。

ifとwhetherの違い：絶対に間違えたくない5つの場面

「〜かどうか」を表すifとwhetherは両方使える

I asked if she was ready.とI asked whether she was ready.は、どちらも「彼女が準備できているかどうか尋ねた」という意味です。Cambridge Dictionaryの文法資料でも、間接的なYes/No疑問にはif・whetherの両方が使えると説明されています。whetherの方がやや改まった文脈で好まれる場合はありますが、学校英語で単純にifを誤りとしないことが大切です。

「もし〜なら」はif：条件の文を間接疑問と混同しない

If it rains, we will stay inside.は「雨が降ること」が屋内で過ごす条件です。一方I wonder whether it will rain.は「雨が降るかどうか」を尋ねているだけで、その結果どう行動するかは述べません。ifがどちらの意味かは後続の主節や動詞（wonder・ask・knowなど）から判断します。

whether to＋動詞：進路・申込・勉強方針の選択に使う

I cannot decide whether to apply.は「申込むかどうか決められない」という意味です。whetherの後にto＋動詞が続きます。これをif to applyとは書きません。whether to join the club、whether to buy the bookなど、決断・選択を述べる際に頻出します。

前置詞＋whether：about・in・onの後に注意

We talked about whether the rule was fair. ではaboutという前置詞があるためwhetherを選びます。It depends on whether he agrees.やI am interested in whether the method works.も同じ考え方です。間接疑問が前置詞の目的語になるときは、前置詞＋whether節を優先します。

whether or notとif … or notの語順

whether or not we can joinは自然ですが、if or not we can joinとはしません。一方、if we can join or notのようにor notを最後に置く形は可能です。すべてのor notをifで使えないわけではありません。別の選択肢を示すwhether A or Bも確認しましょう。

独自40問｜学校の定期テスト・英検長文に役立つif／whether

問1〜5は「両方」という正答があります。問6〜25は指定された2語から正しい形を選びます。問26〜35は誤文訂正ですが、正しい英文をそのまま残す問題も1問あります。問36〜40は和文英訳です。1問1点で計40点です。

第1部｜「〜かどうか」：ifもwhetherも使える（問1〜5）

I don’t know if …などの間接的なYes/No疑問では、両方が自然な文脈があります。正答が1つだけとは限りません。

第2部｜「もし〜なら」：条件のif（問6〜10）

結果が条件に依存する文ではifを使います。whetherは単独で条件のifと同じ役割にはしません。

第3部｜whether＋to不定詞（問11〜15）

進路・判断など「〜するかどうか」をto不定詞で続ける場合はwhether to。if toとはしません。

about / in / onなどの前置詞の後ろにYes/Noの間接疑問を置く場合はwhether。

whether or not＋節は可能。if or not＋節は標準的な形ではありません。if … or notは後ろにor notを置けます。

全問の解説では、if・whetherの意味だけでなく、後ろにtoがあるか、前置詞が先行するか、or notがどこに置かれるかを説明します。答えが「両方」の問題では片方だけ丸暗記しないようにしましょう。

理由：開館しているかどうか、という間接疑問で両方使用可能。

理由：正しいかどうか未確定という意味で両方可能。

いいえ。Yes/Noの間接疑問を表す一般的な形です。I don’t know whether…も使用できます。

whether to goとif to goのどちらですか？

whether to goが正しい形です。to不定詞を直接続ける場合はwhetherを使います。

about ifとabout whetherはどちらを使いますか？

前置詞aboutの直後の間接疑問はabout whetherを用います。about ifは標準的な学習英語では避けます。

if … or notは間違いですか？

いいえ。I don’t know if she will come or not.は使用できます。一方if or not she will comeは避け、whether or not she will comeとします。
