Subject: Saturday Workshop for Visiting Students

Dear Volunteers,

Thank you for helping us welcome visiting students this Saturday. Our workshop was originally planned to begin at 9:00 a.m., but we have moved the starting time to 9:30 because the visitors’ train arrives later than expected. Please come to the community hall by 9:10 to prepare.

After lunch, students will work in small groups to make short presentations about their hometowns. Each presentation should last about three minutes. We hope that everyone can use simple English and ask at least one question after listening.

If the weather is fine, we will take a short walk near the river at 3:00 p.m. If it rains, we will stay inside and watch a short video about the area. We expect to finish at four.

A group of students wanted to know whether reading a little every day helped their classmates enjoy English stories. They invited forty students to try reading in English for fifteen minutes each evening over four weeks. Everyone could choose books at a comfortable level, and students wrote a one-sentence note after each reading session.

At the beginning and end of the project, the students completed the same short reading task. Twenty-four students got higher scores at the end, ten got almost the same scores, and six scored lower. The group also asked students whether reading felt easier. Twenty-eight said it did, but twelve did not notice a difference.

The organizers were pleased, but their teacher reminded them that they had not compared the results with a separate group that did not take part. Other factors, such as regular English lessons or help from family members, might also have affected the results.

For their next project, the students plan to invite another group to follow a different reading schedule. They will also record which kinds of books the students choose. They hope to learn whether short daily reading works better for some readers than for others.

Q31. How many students joined the project? A. Twenty-four. / B. Forty. / C. Twenty-eight.

Q32. How long did students read each evening? A. Fifteen minutes. / B. Thirty minutes. / C. One hour.

Q33. How long did the project last? A. Two weeks. / B. Three weeks. / C. Four weeks.

Q34. What did students write after reading? A. A long essay. / B. A one-sentence note. / C. An email to the teacher.

Q35. How many students received higher scores? A. Six. / B. Ten. / C. Twenty-four.

Q36. How many had almost the same scores? A. Ten. / B. Twelve. / C. Twenty-eight.

Q37. How many felt reading became easier? A. Twenty-four. / B. Twenty-eight. / C. Forty.

Q38. Why did the teacher ask for caution? A. The students were too young. / B. The books were all difficult. / C. No nonparticipating comparison group was used.

Q39. What else might have affected reading scores? A. Regular lessons or help at home. / B. Only the weather. / C. The color of school uniforms.
