  • 2回目:but / however / because / in conclusionなど論理の切れ目に印を付ける。

When I entered junior high school, I thought that making a mistake in English was something to avoid. I practiced long sentences until I could say them perfectly. One day, I forgot a line during a short presentation. I wanted to stop, but I remembered the main idea and explained it using simpler words. My classmates understood me and asked a question. After the presentation, I realized that communication was not only about remembering every word. It was also about understanding the message and continuing when something went wrong. Now I practice the meaning of each paragraph before I memorize its exact wording. I want to be a clear speaker, not just a fast one.

Last month, I saw a younger student standing alone near the school entrance. She looked worried because she could not find the room for her next activity. I did not know the answer immediately, so I checked the school map with her. We found the room together, and she thanked me. It was a small moment, but I began to think about how easily we overlook people who need help. Being kind does not always mean doing something dramatic. Sometimes it means noticing someone, asking a question, and staying for a few minutes. Since that day, I have tried to pay more attention to the people around me. I believe a kinder school begins with small choices.

Our class wanted to reduce the number of paper cups used during school events. At first, I believed that we should simply ask everyone to bring a reusable bottle. However, a friend suggested counting the cups before making a decision. We counted thirty-six cups during one event. After we put up a reminder, we counted twenty-two at a similar event. The number was lower, but we could not prove that the reminder was the only cause. More students might have brought bottles for other reasons. We decided to continue collecting information instead of announcing that our idea had solved the whole problem. I learned that strong opinions need careful evidence, and honest questions are as important as confident answers.

27|What might explain the change besides the reminder?
Other reasons for bringing reusable bottles.

30|Which contrast word introduces a different viewpoint at the start?
However.

I used to think that being a good student meant answering every question quickly. When a teacher asked something difficult, I sometimes guessed instead of admitting that I was unsure. One day, our group discussed an English story about a young traveler. I wanted to explain why the traveler changed her route, but the story did not give a clear reason. My friend asked, ‘Does the text actually say that?’ I looked again and found that I had added information from my imagination. I learned to separate facts from guesses. Now I ask questions such as ‘Where is the evidence?’ and ‘What do we still need to know?’ Asking a careful question can be a sign of understanding, not of weakness.

31|What did the speaker once think a good student did?
Answered every question quickly.
32|What did the speaker sometimes do when unsure?

A story about a young traveler.
34|What did the speaker try to explain?
Why the traveler changed her route.

36|What question did the friend ask?
Does the text actually say that?

Careful questions can show understanding.
