Paragraph 1

At Cedar Hill School, the nature club planted forty young trees in a community garden. The students used seedlings of the same species from one supplier and divided them equally between two marked areas, A and B. Each area received twenty seedlings. Area A was beside a wall that provided shade during part of the afternoon, while Area B was more open to sunlight. The club planned to water the areas on the same days, but the students knew that the soil and wind conditions might still differ. Their teacher asked them to record each planting position and give every seedling a number. Before beginning the study, the class agreed that a small school project could describe changes in these particular seedlings, but it could not establish the best conditions for growing every tree of the same species.

Paragraph 2

Six weeks after planting, the club checked the appearance of each seedling. The students counted those with visible green leaves and firm upright stems. In Area A, seventeen seedlings met this description. In Area B, fourteen did. The group calculated that eighty-five percent of A and seventy percent of B had met the chosen visible criteria. One student wrote that every seedling without green leaves had died. The teacher asked the group to change this sentence, because the observation had not included a specialist assessment of the roots or the plants’ longer-term condition. The club could accurately describe seventeen and fourteen seedlings with visible green leaves and upright stems. It could not assume that the remaining seedlings were all dead. The method and its limitations were written beside the counts.

Paragraph 3

The students then discussed why the two areas had different counts. Ken said that the shade beside Area A must have helped the trees. Emi pointed out that the soil and wind exposure were also different, so the higher count did not prove that shade was the cause. The club looked back at its watering notes and discovered that one planned watering had been missed in Area B during a busy week. That difference was important to record, but it still did not prove which factor had produced the observed result. The teacher asked the students to write several possible explanations rather than select the one they preferred. The group listed shade, soil, watering, and wind as conditions that might matter. It also noted that only one batch of seedlings had been studied.

|根拠:only one batch of seedlings

Paragraph 4

For a future investigation, the nature club proposed checking the seedlings at regular intervals and recording the condition of the leaves, stems, and soil separately. The teacher suggested asking a qualified gardener how to assess seedlings without damaging them. A student wanted to dig up the plants to examine their roots, but the group did not have permission or the training to do that. Instead, the club planned to observe the plants without disturbing the garden. It also wanted to compare two areas that were more similar in soil and watering conditions. These ideas were recorded as future plans, not as experiments already completed. The teacher emphasized that a carefully designed follow-up could improve confidence, but a plan itself did not provide new results. The students therefore left the original counts unchanged.

Paragraph 5

At the school presentation, the club displayed a map of the two areas and a table showing the twenty planted seedlings in each. The report stated that seventeen in A and fourteen in B had met the defined visible condition at the six-week check. It did not label the others as certainly dead or claim that the shaded area would always produce healthier trees. Visitors could also read a short explanation of the missed watering and the different conditions around the plots. The teacher praised the students for replacing an impressive but unsupported claim with a limited and testable description. She reminded them that scientific English requires accurate definitions, dates, and units. A good report can state an interesting difference while also acknowledging that its cause is not yet known.

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
