Read|Paragraph 1

At Willow School, a student committee studied waiting times at a small café that opened during lunch. Some students complained that the line was too long, while others said that service had improved. The committee wanted to make its discussion more precise. It selected five customers on Monday and recorded how many minutes each waited between joining the line and receiving a drink. The times were two, three, four, five, and sixteen minutes. A student added the five numbers and calculated a total of thirty minutes. Dividing by five, she reported an average waiting time of six minutes. She also noticed that four customers had waited no more than five minutes. The fifth customer had waited much longer, which increased the average. The committee decided to keep all five individual times in the report rather than publish only the average.

。根拠:five customers
。根拠:two, three, four, five, and sixteen
。根拠:total of thirty minutes
。根拠:average … six minutes
。根拠:four customers … no more than five

Read|Paragraph 2

On Tuesday, the committee measured another five customers using the same definition of waiting time. The times were four, five, six, seven, and eight minutes. The total was again thirty minutes, so the average was once more six minutes. However, the two days did not feel exactly the same to the students. On Monday, one person had waited sixteen minutes, while nobody on Tuesday had waited longer than eight. The teacher introduced the idea of the median, the middle value after numbers are placed in order. Monday’s median was four minutes, but Tuesday’s median was six. She explained that the average and the median answered different questions. Neither was automatically the best measure in every situation. A useful report should show which measure it was using and why.

。 Tuesday’s median was six

Read|Paragraph 3

The committee then looked at the service process. On Monday, the café had temporarily run out of one drink, and the customer who waited sixteen minutes had asked for that drink. The staff had needed extra time to prepare it. The committee could not prove that this was the only reason for the long wait, but the record gave them a useful question to investigate. On Tuesday, the café had all its usual drinks ready before lunch, and the five measured customers ordered different items. One student suggested removing Monday’s longest time from the calculation to make the average appear more normal. The teacher rejected this idea because the sixteen-minute wait had really happened. An unusual result could be examined separately, but it should not be hidden without an explanation.

Read|Paragraph 4

To improve the next survey, the committee planned to record more than five customers per day and include several weeks. It also decided to note the time of day, the number of staff on duty, and whether any drinks were unavailable. These factors might help explain changes, although the committee could not control every detail of a busy café. The students discussed whether a customer who left the line without receiving a drink should be included in the data. The teacher asked them to decide on a consistent rule before collecting more results. Otherwise, the two days could not be compared fairly. The committee wrote a new form with separate boxes for waiting time, completed orders, and customers who had left. It wanted to prevent changes in definitions from being mistaken for changes in service.

。根拠:more than five … several weeks
。根拠:time of day / number of staff / unavailable
。根拠:left the line without receiving
。根拠:waiting time / completed orders / customers who had left

Read|Paragraph 5

At the end of the term, the students presented what they had learned. Their report did not claim that Tuesday was better simply because its median was higher, nor did it claim that Monday was worse merely because the average was the same. They showed the actual waiting times and explained that the sample had been small. They also included a suggestion to check whether certain drinks caused unusually long delays and to improve preparation when possible. A member said that the best part of the project was learning how a single number could hide a different pattern. The teacher agreed but added another lesson: readers should ask who was measured, when the measurements were taken, and what was counted. The committee promised to collect more information before proposing changes to the café’s working hours.

。根拠:sample had been small
。根拠:whether certain drinks caused … delays
。根拠:single number could hide a different pattern
。根拠:collect more information before proposing changes

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
